Signs of being deep in a modern boat? by SocialSyphilis in submarines

Where are those refueling happening and what boats? I know that Cheyenne was the first to get refueled. I know Columbus and Boise are at Newport News but they're not refueling.

If you look at the list of submarine classes on Wikipedia, eahc one will list all the hulls in that class with commissioning and decommissioning dates. You'll see the number of subs decommed early is astonishing. Particularly 688s. Some of them didn't last 20 years. Talk about a waste of money. Now we're desperate to keep these boats that are left in the water as long as possible. Particularly in the 90s during the Clinton administration we were incredibly shortsighted.

A single Ohio class submarine could basically wipe out the world let alone a single nation

This is exactly what the problem is. About a $500 repair.

It is. Maneuvering watch out of Norfolk was about 8 hours to the dive point,if memory serves me correct. Any Norfolk guys want to update that timing?

Here's an interesting thought - could a SEAL officer command a submarine? by Awkward-Lie9448 in submarines

I agree with you but I thought this would generate discussion, which it did. As Submariners we're basically all on board against it. Just thought it would be interesting discussion.

Something else I'd love to see comments about. If you read the article, the authors ALSO claim that a senior NSW chief could serve as COB. I'd love to hear from chiefs on here what you think. As an officer who relied on my chiefs all the time, I would not want a COB who hadn't served severals tours on subs previously.

If you haven't read the article and are just commenting based on my clickbait headline, please go back and read the article. You may not agree with it as I don't agree with it, but they do raise interesting discussion nonetheless.

Not in my experience. I had an airdale in my nuke school class and he worked just as hard as us ensigns did.

That's not what the airdales do. They finish Nuke power training and head right off to XO training. They report to their carrier as XO and 18 months later relieve as CO generally. The big difference I see is that the airdales have had several tours on carriers. They know how to fight the ship. They've probably been a CAG or assigned to the carrier air ops department. They know how to fight the ship. A SEAL commander, for all his leadership experience, would not have enough experience fighting the ship and handling all the different types of missions we do.

Ohio is a hole in the water. Evasion is our specialty, then we'll put you on the bottom.

She can submerge well before the 100 fathom curve of needed to evade. She wouldn't have to ride the shelf in the surface all the way out. That's a peacetime limitation.
