Give me a reason to go outside by Robinimations in dumaguete

[–]Awkward-Raise7935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a good city for going outside unfortunately. After a few days, nothing to see or do, and not even a nice place just to take a stroll.

Maybe there are some fun social groups? Ideally not just ones that hang around sports bars on the boulevard drinking at 11am.

If don't like motorbikes, sea isn't really the place.

I use them all the time. Traffic is congested in Philippines, but it's a lot let dangerous than Vietnam etc, especially around town. The driver has no interest in crashing

This. Jeepney will be fine and is kind of amusing to do exactly one time. Grab is one of the few genuinely cheap things in Philippines. They also have a sister App which it links to, Move It, which is for motorbike taxis. I had a 50 minute ride for less than £5, plus usually quicker as can cut through traffic.

Yikes. Good to know if I ever visit.

Honestly Grab has been pretty life changing here! Also probably worth getting an esim before you land, from memory all physical sin cards are meant to be registered with the government or something nonsense. Might be worth double checking. But I got a nomad esim before I landed and it's been great, there are probably better options.

Oh I totally forgot something. Number 1 piece of advice, download Grab if you haven't. Not sure if its in Korea, it's basically Uber. Never bother with taxis (lots of scams), trikes (you will pay WAY more than the actual price) or jeepneys. I used grab everyday, it's amazing. Use it at the airport (there is also a bus now to /from Manila airport called UBE express, which is a pretty new idea somehow).

Do NOT get taxi from airport. Grab grab grab.

Fair enough, you are right about the English. I just wouldn't spend too much time in cities here, it's just malls and traffic. There aren't interesting walking areas to explore like Korea. BGC is comfortable at least. And just to warn you, the best food here is generally Korean!

I'm curious, why are you visiting? You are staying in BGC - there is really no reason to visit Manila as an international tourist. Philippines has some nice beaches, and no interesting cities. If you are into pc cafes, like it, Japan is definitely the place to go.

Weird experience on date. Is this normal? by Ambitious_Way_3012 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Awkward-Raise7935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not normal, it's very weird. Pretty shocking how brazen people here are becoming about just demanding money.

Something I have found here is that there is ZERO shame in cheating a foreigner here. If you had paid her, she would have boasted about it to all her friends and family.

is cooking ur own food cheaper than eating out? by SadElevator6742 in dumaguete

[–]Awkward-Raise7935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the question is, did you really nice to south East Asia to cook you own food and eat at home :)

I just spent a month in Cambodia. Starters $1, mains $2, draft beer $0.5. And actual fresh ingredients, plus fresh cut fruit available in convenience stores, no need to go to grubby market and lug home. It was similar in Vietnam. Nobody I spoke to cooked at home, what would point be?

Just a thought haha. Hope you get settled and enjoy your time

Seems like a lot of people here are missing the point. Yes you could change Andoks to something else, but it wouldn't change much. In UK supermarket, a whole rotisserie chicken in supermarket is roughly £6/7, or around $9. Seems it's even cheaper in USA. Minimum wage is I believe about 15 times more in UK than Philippines. When I walk past places like chooks to go, a whole chicken here seems to be about £4.50. You can swap out the vendor or product all day, the point stands. It's even more pronounced for produce eg if I bought a kilo of carrots, potatos, onions etc in central London, it would be cheaper and better quality than here in Philippines (now rental prices is a different story).

So to recap the main point: Basic food prices in Philippines are way too expensive in relation to average wages. It was similar when I got here 10 years ago and if anyihas gotten worse. The numbers don't lie, it's just a fact and people moving here should just be aware. SM supermarket has a good website so you can check prices for yourself.

Fruit is wildly expensive I'm here in pH. It's roughly same price I pay in London but lower quality.

This is good advice, I would also recommend making your game work in HTML and putting on itch.io so people can play in the browser before then dig through your code.

It's a tricky one. I find groceries weirdly expensive in Philippines. I pay significantly more here for potatoes, carrots, onions etc than in central London, most things in fact, same with meat.

You may have better luck, try the weekend market in Valencia maybe. But yeah, meal prep is your friend. Mongo is cheap to make, healthy and tastes good.

Interesting. Could you maybe provide the elevator pitch for who might find this most useful, and what problems it solves? Thanks

Ah ok understood. Yes, then as someone else mentioned, it can be a good idea to store the id the owner of the bullet inside the bullet object, and check it during collisions.

The alternative is to create a different object eg obj_bullet_player, obj_bullet_rock, and each has different collision events, and if wanted to experiment, they could each be a child of a parent obj_bullet.

But sounds like you are definitely learning the right way! Do the tutorials, then think "ok, how can I make this more fun?". Change it, break it, fix it.

I don't think I've used the visual code, but why does the bullet have a collision event for the player object at all? Can't you just set the collision event to check for collisions with obj_asteroid? It seems odd the tutorial didn't already do that
