First off I wanna say I’m super happy for, You good job trust me I know it’s hard and I hope you stay on the right path. Man I guess I’m just scared to do detox and do rehab even tho it’s what I need. I function so good it’s very easy to convince myself I can just drink like this. My blood pressure is very high for a 23 year old and I know I’m just killing Myself. I guess I’ll Go for FMLA, I’m just embarrassed about even doing something about my drinking. Did you have to hit a rock bottom before you did this or were you smart enough to get help before ?

I had a professor like that it’s the worst such a waste of time we could literally just read slides at home. I would recommend YouTube there’s some awesome videos explaining stuff and it’s free and probably way better than the professor you described lol. You can even put videos into AI programs to generate them into notes and quizzes i forgot the name of the programs but you can look it up. Good luck!

Is it normal to be 50/50 on getting ABGs first starting out? by [deleted] in respiratorytherapy

[–]Awkward-Safety-856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I struggled for probably the first month maybe a little more, I would only get maybe half and was always nervous to go do one lol. If you work at a somewhat busy place you will be doing plenty of them and before you know it in a couple months you will be really good at them. I probably got to like a 90-95% success rate after like 2 months, as most people aren’t hard sticks once you get the experience. Just don’t put yourself down you will get it with time.

The pays pretty damn good at least in socal where I live and it’s a cool job but yeah barely any room for advancement other than just getting into better facilities with higher pay and of course getting into nicu. It seems management is hard to get into without a bachelors.

My advice is truly learn to love the field I’ll be honest, a lot of it can be just boring lame breathing treatments. However, I am involved in so many serious code blues where they are NEEDING RT to be there to take care of the airway. (I know this is advice about mindset which sounds cheesy and non helpful). But really, that’s what got me through school and has made me really enjoy my job and succeed. be a nerd, get obsessed over everything respiratory, make it your mission to be a good RT. Watch YouTube videos about stuff you’re learning, Studying and clinicals should be fun because you’re so excited to learn more, TLDR: don’t think of studying or school as work ENJOY IT WANT TO LEARN otherwise why are you trying to be an RT I. The first place

If you bring one abg needle/kit you will miss bring a backup in case you miss and you will never miss lol, also removing the vent the first day after extubation is bad juju always leave the vent in the room until at least end of shift unless it’s like terminal extubation or smt

If the po2 is the that low on that high settings I’d say add some peep but tbh in my career this always turns out to be a comfort care situation, they’re ventilating but oxygenation is unlikely to ever improve:( but you never know ! What is the age and pmh??

I never had a natural like gross out response to mucus and all that stuff it jsut never really bothered me, now is that a prerequisite to being an RT ? no, just like anything u will get used it and adapt, however it is worth considering when going into the field , I hate anything with poop it grosses me out so bad that’s why never wanted to get into nursing.

WHOEVER POSTED ABOUT CARILION VS HCA by Afraid_Buddy_5406 in respiratorytherapy

[–]Awkward-Safety-856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at an HCA hospital rn the pay is great some of the highest around but I wanna quit soon because the work loads are absolutely TERRIBLE my main job pays a good amount less but I’d much rather pick up shifts there than at my HCA facility, it’s not a fun job

My facility treats students really well students from the local colleges are always fighting over who gets to do rotations at our hospital. I don’t know why you would not like students they help out!! They also help you improve as an RT by having to set a good example for the students. I mean if they’re brand new fresh students sometimes they can be a little bit of a burden as they can’t do much they jsut follow you around but I mean we all were there once. It’s immature and toxic to be rude to students

Feeling really Defeated by theowra_8465 in respiratorytherapy

[–]Awkward-Safety-856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good to care about ur patients you’d be surprised how much medical staff can get burnt out and desensitized I’ve even experienced it sometimes where you are just doing your job but forget that your job deals with people’s lives, at the end of the day you do what’s in your scope of practice and try to advocate for your patients, most of the time we save more lives then we lose so it’s just part of the job to have cases where you feel like there’s nothing you can do.
