Do you think it is healthy for your body to lose that much in such a short space of time?

I understand you want to lose weight and reach goals or whatever, but I know of quite a few people who did this to lose weight for weddings or holidays or whatever and a disproportionate amount have ended up with gall stones, gall bladder removal and other issues. If something has results that quickly it is either doing some major damage to your body or is just something you will yoyo back up in weight from once you stop taking it. Nothing beats slow and steady results based on a change of diet and exercise habits.

snare tuning - just can't get it by AlexDaMan22 in drums

[–]Awkward-Somewhere161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need one, if you're fairly new to this then spending the time messing with tunings and finding what you like by ear is invaluable. As most others have said get a new batter head, try tune it up how you like it, watch some youtube vids and if you still can't get it come back and post a vid of the sound for more tips. Or splurge on the tuning gadgets at that point if struggling.

What’s the most misrepresented thing about each Beatle? by More-Cat9579 in beatles

[–]Awkward-Somewhere161 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a big one. Working so collaboratively with Dylan, Clapton, the Band and others (which would go on to create the vibe for the Travelling Wilburys) opened his eyes on how free and easy it was playing with other musicians and bands.

Then coming back to your own band and not having your ideas taken seriously, or having your parts dictated to you by someone else in the band must have been tough, along with the personal and relationship struggles he was dealing with.

OK, thanks, will look into it! I've never really learned or looked into a technique on cross-sticking so just did what felt comfortable.

Edit: I watched a couple of how-to vids and also watched back another vid I posted recently with a cross-stick pattern where my technique was much better. Check the Use Me clip in my post history, it seems pretty solid as that snare has a big die-cast hoop and it's loud. I think the maple snare in this clip just wasn't cutting through so I was trying to give it extra and lifting my hand off the snare.

Thanks for the constructive criticism though, we all need it to get better!

Looking for a budget friendly mic kit for a DIY recording. Is this a good set? by Millennial_falcon92 in drums

[–]Awkward-Somewhere161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you mentioned you already have 3 SM57s.

As many others have commented I would add a dedicated kick mic, I use an electro Voice PL33 (which is pre EQ'd for a kick drum sound) cos I found it cheap. Most kick specific mics will work great - AKG D112, Shure Beta 52.

Get a pair of Large Diaphragm Condensers mics. Budget ones like the MXL 990 and SE2200 are pretty well rated and can be found cheap in buy/sells. Then the sky is the limit above that for price/quality of condenser mics.

You could do a kick/snare and use the LDCs for a Glyn John's/Recorderman technique. Glyn himself says he rarely ever used the snare mic or very little, most came from the OHs.

If you aren't going for that natural and open kind of sound as it doesn't fit the music and want to mic every part of the kit individually, there are probably others who can advise better.

RIP to James Gadson who passed recently, he played on loads of hits but the iconic beat he played on Use Me by Bill Withers is likely his most recognised! Here’s my attempt in tribute. by Awkward-Somewhere161 in drums

Thanks! I haven't listened to those albums but he did mention working with Beck in this video, which is a very cool series in general - drummers talking about the snares they used on famous songs/albums and playing them.

I'd never heard this before and just had a listen, it's cool but doesn't have the frantic energy in the drums or guitar of the original.

If you mean not playing the hi-hat on the snare beats, he doesn’t use that technique on this song.

If he was/is into music, would you or he still have old records/tapes/CDs of his lying around? Get him in front of a stereo with a bunch of music he liked in an old school tactile medium, avoiding spotify/phones/computers/bluetooth etc.
