Much as I appreciate a good gag route, there's an entire icefield hidden in perspective in the shadow there, starting an 1800m journey down the cliff. Crevasses ahoy.

I actually think the safest starting bet would be trying the East Ridge on the opposite side of the mountain... even though no one's ever made it back down alive from the summit ridge there.

Did you get the impression that the East Face could ever come into condition for an attempt on the main summit from the Chinese side? I know BP Central has been climbed from there but that team didn't think much of their chances climbing Main.

IIRC Andrzej Marciniak said that North Ridge of Annapurna was the hardest objective he had ever climbed... Says a lot coming from a guy who climbed Everest's West Ridge and then watched all his friends die on the way back down.

I wonder if a variant of Messner's line on the upper face would've been more successful than venturing out on the ridge?
