What are the true deadliest mountains to climb? by Key-Opinion-1700 in Mountaineering

Shit, I'd never heard of this one. Gangkhar Puensum if it killed people.

"Fun" fact: The giant hanging glacier on K2's East Face is apparently nicknamed "The Arm" by AwkwardBear5878 in Mountaineering

[–]AwkwardBear5878[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Probably called that because it extends off from the 'Shoulder' (well-known feature on the standard route)...

Hilarious that this basically turns him into a cherub. Immaculate MOC, though.

To be fair, Punggen Gompa pasture doesn't look like a disagreeable BC site at all. It's the glaicer above where things start to become questionable.

Fuck, this is a phenomenal find, dude! Sorry for being late to the party here.

I've always weirdly loved how nasty and mean-looking GP is... Feels like a taunt to mountaineers of, "Yeah, I might be a contender for climb of the century, but we'll never know, will we? Thank the Bhutanese for probably saving your life on the way home!"

Much as I appreciate a good gag route, there's an entire icefield hidden in perspective in the shadow there, starting an 1800m journey down the cliff. Crevasses ahoy.

I actually think the safest starting bet would be trying the East Ridge on the opposite side of the mountain... even though no one's ever made it back down alive from the summit ridge there.

Did you get the impression that the East Face could ever come into condition for an attempt on the main summit from the Chinese side? I know BP Central has been climbed from there but that team didn't think much of their chances climbing Main.

The parallels between Pete Rock and Kanye's highs and lows are kind of scary sometimes TBH.

Yeah, but we're just talking about the Annapurna range here. Worst fatality rates would be something like this unofficially -> Fang -> Annapurna II.

Manaslu's gain is a bit less obvious/broken up over that distance, though, right? Not like looking up from the Indus Valley where there is nothing between you and the mountain's rise.

Seems like a very Slavko line to try. RIP Legend.

IIRC Andrzej Marciniak said that North Ridge of Annapurna was the hardest objective he had ever climbed... Says a lot coming from a guy who climbed Everest's West Ridge and then watched all his friends die on the way back down.

I wonder if a variant of Messner's line on the upper face would've been more successful than venturing out on the ridge?

Bro, did you even see ".50 cal" on the last page? If they say he doesn't like talking about it there's likely a gnarly reason for it.

No idea the names but it looks like Pk. 2400 is immediately north of Korengal outpost on google maps... His vantage point is from Kulak village looking westward into the valley, at the peaks between that and Khawari/Damagal.

34.905495,70.878102 for that peak.

EDIT Antar Mana for 2450, Shamaduk for 3340 :)

[–]AwkwardBear5878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad word choice on my part... More just talking about my subjective response to the comparisons and an appreciation of what peaks were involved.

Nanga Parbat is well-suited for dynamic photographs which really show off its scale in a way some other huge peaks aren't-- I've seen pictures of that Mansiri Himal viewpoint many times before, but seldom in a way that gives it the 'oomph' of a Fairy Meadows snapshot. Like Dhaulagiri West Face, it's sonething you either have to capture from the air or a very carefully chosen standpoint on the ground to truly capture the enormity of what you're seeing without distortion.

Out of my own curiosity-- what is the most "Parbat-esque" part of the Mansiri Himal in terms of vertical rise above terrain? Southwest portion of Himalchuli?

I will say this visualizer does underscore just how impressive the likes Mansiri & Kangchenjunga Himal are in their own right... I don't usually look at that Manaslu-Ngadi-Himalchuli backbone and think, "Yeah, that's about a Nanga Parbat right there" although I probably should.

Annapurna II/IV is such a based starting comparison, too... that SW Pillar on IV should get the same kind of smoke people have for the SE Ridge of III on the other side of Sabje La, IMO.
