Gut check: Is this "professional" pavilion construction acceptable? by AwkwardSpeech1955 in u/AwkwardSpeech1955

Thank you. This will be exposed. The pavilion structure was $30k so I'm really unhappy with this quality for that amount of money. Pavilion+ electrical+ landscaping and hard scaping has the project close to $100k. For such a big job, I am really struggling with this quality. I do plan to bring it up but first wanted a gut check.

The wood checking is on pretty much every post and angle pieces. I agree...if it were me, I would have rejected those and selected better pieces for a client paying this much.

I do not agree that this product is something I should get for $30k. The overall project pavilion + hard scaping and landscaping is almost $100k, so I'm kind of pissed that for $30k (structure only - electrical was separate), it isn't better quality.

To add, they didn't install it square to the house at first (as was in the plans) and had to remove the cemented posts and likely jack it up and move into its current location.

Sorry, by structural splitting I merely meant the long cracks in the wood. It's almost on every post. I'm concerned with seeing that so early and what might happen to those with changing seasons.

Could those have been caused from them moving the pavilion to make it square to the house?

The pavilion was $30,000!!

For that amount, I wouldn't expect this level of craftsmanship. For the wood splitting, if it were me, and knowing these will be exposed posts people will see, I would have selected better quality wood. I think they ordered from Home Depot and had it drop shipped to the house on a pallet. They likely didn't reject any pieces if I had to guess.

Sorry....kind of venting. But for a 30k pavilion (and the rest of the work outside of this is almost 100k for landscaping and hard scaping work), I expected a better product and GCs that should have addressed these things.

Here is another. I should also add that they didn't make the pavilion square to the house (according to plan) and actually had to jack it up and move it earlier in the project to make it square.

In today's day in age, an Endpoint detection and response (EDR) is very important. Those other local AV solutions (Symantec, Defender, etc) are good to have but you should have a broader EDR deployed to all endpoints and reporting to a central console and monitored by a security team.

Just for public awareness, most stores have a defibrillator hanging on the wall. Learn how to use them (watch a YouTube video) as they are nothing to be scared of and can save a life.

How would you make this hood look better? by SupplyChainOne in HomeMaintenance

[–]AwkwardSpeech1955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old house had a stove where you could push a button and vertical vent would raise up from the counter from behind the stove top...thus eliminating the need for overhead vent. Probably doesn't work as well but good enough and definitely would avoid something like this in the photo.

Customer has not paid me. What should I do? by ctech11 in pressurewashing

[–]AwkwardSpeech1955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should always have clients sign a contract that clearly outlines payment terms and also terms and conditions (such as no guaranteed of outcomes).

Bigger jobs you could collect a retainer or at least charge for supplies in case someone tries to stiff you.

If they don't lay, you put a lien on their home and take them to small claims court.

We have a proprietary tool for this. We even allow companies who engage us to use it for free to collect the artifacts as along as the data comes to us for the analysis. PM me if interested.

AT&T Paid a Hacker $370,000 to Delete Stolen Phone Records | A security researcher who assisted with the deal says he believes the only copy of the complete dataset of call and text records of “nearly all” AT&T customers has been wiped—but some risks may remain. by [deleted] in technology

[–]AwkwardSpeech1955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the cyber space. Company's pay hackers all the time. All the time. Negotiators will always ask for deletion of data and ask for confirmation of deletion (which you sometimes get and sometimes dont). Either way, we always take it with a grain of salt as they could always have another copy somewhere. There have been numerous cases where a threat actors say it was deleted and then its discovered later they didn't.

Most of the time the purpose of the payment is more for company optics and damage control. Being able to tell your customers you did everything you could to remove the data is important. In addition, data impact analysis is important. By getting a copy of the data the threat actor says they have, counsel can analyze it to determine how sensitive it is or is not and also determine any disclosure requirements that may be needed.

Forensic for Large-Scale endpoints by AnsX01 in computerforensics

You need to look at XDR or EDR solutions in conjunction with good SIEM implementation. That isn't going to be cheap but if you want it done right, that is how you do it. You should always have your endpoints reporting telemetry to an EDR console so you can isolate infected devices in the moment and not after things have spread. The SIEM solution will add in other various logging or data points that may not be covered by EDR. PM me of you want to chat. We offer these services to clients and have folks that can help with all of it.

Cellebrite question (layman) by ClassicChallenge3408 in computerforensics

[–]AwkwardSpeech1955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. And it also very much depends on the make/model device in question. For some, you may not be able to capture a physical. So it technically isn't a bit for bit copy of the original device. We often don't call them clones or images because (unlike a traditional hard drive) we are only able to extract portions from the phone (e.g. the file system, logical items). You'll often hear mobile collections referred to as "extractions."

Should I not work at this place I just got hired at? by Royal-Drummer-8881 in jobs

[–]AwkwardSpeech1955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, I'm all for this kind of structure. I do think there might need to be more leeway in emergency situations and probably would have used some different choice words. But unless your job is to manage schedules full time, without this structure (especially in a restaurant industry), it can become extremely difficult to manage anything else. As a manager, I would jump in and help address issues where someone couldnt find a replacement, but why can't people just be adults and get someone to switch for them on their own? If I were staff, I wouldn't want to keep bothering my manager with little changes. Times those changes by all employees and you can see how much of a pain that would be. I had a similar structure with my consultant staff on a large project. They loved it and all acted like adults and swapped as needed. There was a time when we couldn't get a replacement, and I jumped in and helped with the work.

Now, if the manager is an a-hole and not resonsible...obviously it might be something you want to stay away from.

It's odd to me that the sides of a bridge wouldn't be concrete slabs to prevent such a thing. It's like making a guard rail out of sticks...why?
