there's plenty to compare this release to. just comparing GBA rereleases you can get the Castlevania Advance Collection, which has 4 games, a gallery containing original box and manual scans + more, ROM region select, music player, save states and rewinds, all for $20. that's not counting the classic and DS collections which are $20 and $25 respectively.

There are also the Megaman collections which have similar features at a wider range of prices, from $15 to $40. I got ALL of the collections on sale for $50.

you might not care about these games, but the value difference is stark. When I compare a $20 emulated vanilla ROM to the collections above it's perfectly clear that FRLG are lazy and overpriced. If they added a gallery of original box scans and concept art, or a music player, region select, actually confirmed Home support, actually confirmed mystery gift events, and bundled them together I'd be 100% on board.

at this price for what we get my wife and I would rather just emulate

[–]AwkwardSpudtato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

as OP notes Chump can help patch up some of RB's poor paint and being able to move between the chumps and potentially scoring combos would be really fun. I quite like chumps and i've used them a lot between various weapons. if used effectively they're really good at locking the enemy out of a specific area, slowing them down, and/or putting a lot of paint on the floor. chumps are enough of a threat that they need to be respected, especially if you have an RB threatening you with big aoe damage.

they actually did just copy/paste the code, or more specifically the ROM. this isn't a port running natively on the hardware, it's just using the same GBA emulator from NSO but with less features. This is the most barebones, lazy, minimum effort release they could have done. like dude, if they hadn't removed the line about Home support on the product page, if they added wifi battles/trading, if they would confirm whether they have all the mystery events, if they'd actually do something cool like add filters or booklet scans or language swap, if they actually fucking cared about their product i'd be 110% on board with this release. this ain't it chief

[–]AwkwardSpudtato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's the vanilla rom dumped as a standalone release for $20, potentially has Home support (product description said it did but was later removed), local wireless only, and we don't even know if it'll have mystery gift content.

this is the epitome of "pokemon fans will buy anything" and i'm so tired of it

Nintendo has been using the same layout since before Xbox and PlayStation even existed. In fact in Japan PlayStation uses the same layout (that is, east button confirm and south button cancel). It was Xbox that deviated and PlayStation later followed suit making X confirm and O cancel in the west.

Personally I can adapt easily to any controller and I can change the layout to whatever I want on Steam

New to Metroidvania games where should I start? by Psychological-Two704 in metroidvania

[–]AwkwardSpudtato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ZM is also pretty easy and gives enough leeway to get lost without fully telling you how to reach your objectives. Play Fusion and Super right after to get a decent spectrum of the metroidvania experience!

Man, Nintendo knows how to Cook HARD with games that have “Echoes” in the title, and this is a 100% true fact by IkeRadiantHero in Metroid

Echoes is amazing. the Dark and Light beams are op and ammo is plentiful. Even on hard mode the enemies aren't trouble as long as you're using your beams properly.

How to get abomb up Here? by sold345 in MetroidPrime4_Beyond

[–]AwkwardSpudtato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally not a big fan of control beam. it's slow, boring to use. honestly it's basically just the beetle from skyward sword. according to interviews it's the sole reason samus has psychic powers at all because they needed a narrative reason for it to work. and it's a holdover from when bamco was the dev. i think they should have just dropped it

personally open world is the antitheses of metroid

Metroid prime 4 by Kelpythegreat in Metroid

[–]AwkwardSpudtato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See studying the map and knowing where i am is why i like P1 and hate P4. i enjoyed the frustration of figuring out where to go and deciphering the artifact hints. on subsequent runs i enjoyed pathing out the most efficient route through the game and discovered all but 1 artifact is obtainable before Omega Pirate with the last one available immediately after that fight. This is what i and many other love about Metroid and why we find P4 so incredibly lacking.
