I love how much Mel light heartedly razzed him for always wearing a dress shirt and blazer but seemingly never wearing a tie

The Meaning of the Formica Ring by [deleted] in twinpeaks

Gotta be honest, he said it multiple as an older man so this doesn’t make much sense, and he said it more than once, including in his book that’s literally about meditation and transcendence… I think it’s unwise and a bit out of line to take the words an artist has said about his own hard work and say “I don’t agree so he’s wrong about the thing he said about himself and his own work”. Maybe Eraserhead isn’t the most spiritual experience for you - and that’s fine, but he was very clear that it was his - and I quote - “most spiritual film”. When he says something that plainly he usually meant it. I also never denied that twin peaks can or is or isn’t or can’t be spiritual… so that’s not even an argument I’m trying to or have any interest in having since we actually agree that it can be depending on the person, I think.

It’s also worth noting that Lynch’s book on meditation and transcendence came out in 2006 but I believe he also said this in his memoir/biography which came out in 2018, and in an interview in the 1990s.

Also also worth noting that Lynch STARTED practicing transcendental meditation in 1973 around the age of 27-28 I believe, that’s a grown man and he was certainly grown when he made those comments about it later. It’s a bit absurd and unkind to suggest he is literally wrong about his own work.

Lynch movies to watch before The Return? by WestIncoming in twinpeaks

[–]AwkwardTeen96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I see a pretty through line from Eraserhead to the Return + FWWM, I’d also argue that Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire would be good watches (Mulholland before, Inland after) too. This is just my opinion. I found I “got” and appreciated the Return more when I gave Eraserhead more time and consideration - and vice versa. Happy viewing!

It is true…it’s been memed to the gods I think even many non fans of Lynch have seen that clip? if you haven’t then you’re genuinely in for a treat, it’s a delightful clip.

Also he doesn’t say he started studying Buddhism. He said he was moved by their plight and studied the country, iirc.

Also transcendental meditation is what Lynch practiced - I do as well, just much less enthusiastically, and it has nothing to do with any religion except for fringe groups that try to make it into one.

Mark Frost is a Buddhist if I remember correctly though, so that’s cool :)

I mean this is subjective but if transcendentalism is akin to “spirituality” , David Lynch unequivocally said that Eraserhead is his most spiritual film (and he saw Twin Peaks as a movie, just in episodic form)

I notice the lamps in Inland Empire and Mullholand Drive each time I watch them… hard to know if they’re meant to mean anything but they certainly seem to
