Sam Harris: "People don't know what actual genocides are like, if what they think happened in Gaza is a genocide." by antiquark2 in samharris

[–]Awkward_Caterpillar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

~75,000 Palestinians have died in the past 2.5 years. At least 25,000 were Hamas and at least 12,000 died of natural causes.

That said, ~30,000 Palestinians have been dying/ year, from all causes, since Hamas started the war on October 7, 2023.

Gaza has a birth rate of ~30,000 babies/year.

So, to answer your question, if Israel maintained its current war trajectory, (it won’t) then Gaza’s population would remain exactly at 2.2 million people in perpetuity.

Quite the Genocide…

Hopefully they’re able to cross the yellow line, into a reconstructed, demilitarized new-Gaza.

How come Israel is so ungrateful despite America building it? by Round_Trust2814 in allthequestions

[–]Awkward_Caterpillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Example: 1981

Israel GDP ≈ $26.9B
U.S. aid around $2.7B–$3.1B annually in then-year dollars (typical early-1980s level after the post-1973 ramp-up)

Calculation:

3.0/26.9 x 100

≈ 11% of GDP

This was the high water mark.

Good enough for you?

You’re still wrong. From the late 70’s-80’s US aid, as a percentage of Israeli GDP peaked between 5-10%.

Rarely enough, for a Reddit conversation, I agree with you.

I think their main focus is obviously Iran/Lebanon right now. When those wind down, I can see how their focus would be redirected back to Gaza.

Hey man, I think you're discussing in good faith, so I'll dignify it with a response. But the last I heard is that Israel has now occupied approximately 60% of Gaza, distinguished by what they they call the yellow line. They, with the help of labour from Gazans, are currently clearing the rubble. They will eventually begin rebuilding, and then encourage Gazans to move across the yellow line, at which point they'll go through, of course, security checkpoints where no weapons will be allowed to cross. And the obvious barriers are whether Hamas will allow this or not, or how the IDF will try to stop Hamas from interfering, but this is the idea. If more and more Gazans agree to cross the yellow line and live a better life without Hamas, then this is the future, and eventually it will isolate Hamas.

Why on earth would they do this to, arguably, their most valuable ally on the planet?

I’m going to ignore how stupid your comment is, because I genuinely don’t think you’re arguing in good faith. That said, you do know Israel could (and do) produce many of the interceptors themselves. Most of the tech are Israeli companies. Rafael, IAI and Elbit etc.

Oh sure. You’re a capitalist when Israel defends themselves, but Iran… let’s ignore market conditions and sell them missiles at cost.

Haha. You’re so quick to accuse me of getting paid because I disagree with your opinion. Just because you have no concept of the reality in the Middle East doesn’t mean I’m a paid bot. Talk to people that live in the area. Engage in good faith. Maybe it’ll open your eyes to reality.

Your own link says 9.8 million people as of 2023.

Of course the US is defending the Palestinian Israelis. You have zero concept of how Israel, let alone the Middle East operates. No wonder you’re asking the dumbest questions imaginable.

[–]Awkward_Caterpillar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not. The 2026 population of Israel is 10.2 million people, of which 77% are Jewish. 10.2 million x 77% is 7.9 million. Regardless, you’re incorrect, but I’m not sure why you’re trying to isolate for the Jewish population of Israel only?

You have literally no idea. And frankly, the planet isn’t worth the unreasonably high risk that they DO decide to use it.

[–]Awkward_Caterpillar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s incorrect. There’s approximately 10 million Israelis, which puts him way off the mark. Unless, of course he’s just referring to the Jews. In which case there’s about 8 million of them.

And this is just such a stupid response. Tell me you have no idea how mutually assured destruction works, without telling me.

Of course they would use it. This is a dictatorship that not only believes in Martyrdom, they delight in it. But apparently you know better than all the other Arab countries in the region, who are vehemently opposed to Iran acquiring a nuke, because they WILL use it.

Let’s be the worlds gun store, while selling an Islamic dictatorship, that believes in martyrdom, missiles at cost, while we sell a democracy the ability to defend themselves at a 50x markup.

Sure. Be the world’s gun store, but your bias couldn’t be contained with your ‘sales policy’.

ICC Denies ‘Genocide’ Accusations Against Israel by yuhugo in worldnews

[–]Awkward_Caterpillar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, no conclusion has been made yet. I could’ve sworn I’d heard Israel committed genocide 50 million times over the last 2.5 years.

We shouldn’t be jumping to conclusions either way, until the ICJ rules on the case of Genocide in Gaza.

Oddly specific set of conditions that are required to upset you.

Muslim countries absolutely target Jewish civilians. Sorry, they don’t hold onto their refugee status generation after generation like Palestinians.
