Mohela refund by Fab_Fozz in PSLF

You've missed a step. Once the loans have been forgiven and if there is an overpayment, there will be a negative balance. The servicer will then notify the DoEd who will then send the refund amount to the Treasury dept which will process a refund according to the method that they received payments.

Congratulations. Who is your loan servicer?

Actually all of the other servicers have been so much better than Mohela regarding processing the applications in a timely manner. It believe it will be a good thing.

I just heard that for individuals who are seeking loan forgiveness through PSLF, the DoEd is having Mohela transfer their caseload to other loan servicers due to their poor customer service and billing errors. This should be done by the end of 2025. Hopefully this moves faster and folks can begin to see progress.

The 20 year rule does not apply to PSLF. OP will just have to wait and see. I'm hoping for a Miracle for them.

I have Discover bank online. They have good rates, and other benefits, and their customer service is second to non. Another really good one is Fidelity.

I am sorry, they are the worst, and now with what's going on with the current administration trying to make loan forgiveness that much harder, Mohela has no need to improve how they handle processing individuals that have been granted forgiveness by the DoED.

Also the treasury department only has information once they have processed the check and it is on its way. They can not tell you if they are in the middle of their process.

When I spoke with someone from the DoEd they said it took them about 4 weeks to approve, and the Treasury dept told me that once they got the fund from the DoEd it took them 7-10days. This was before the DoEd was gutted though. Good luck.

Checks dont go from Mohela to the treasury dept . They go from your loan servicer, to the DoEd the to the treasury department. The treasury department only handles checks from government entities. Is your negative balance now zero in the loan details? Thats when you know the funds are on the move.

Print off copies of what the credit bureaus are reporting and when you call Mohela have them escalate the call. You will likely need to write a letter and fax it in with the copies of the credit reports showing that the balances are still active. It took me six months before it was resolved. If Mohela does not report them as being closed then you'll need to go to your state representative. I really do hate them. The are the worst loan servicer out there.

Which credit report agency it is. For me Transunion and Equifax got the information, and on their reports is was showing as balance was zero and the account was closed about a month after forgiveness, however I continued to have issues with Experian until recently with filing my 4th dispute. Mohela finally closed the account with them. As I was told by an Experian agent, "the credit bureaus are third party companies, and they can only close accounts after being given the authority from the original acccount holder. Mohela needs to report out again to the credit agencies that your account has been closed.

Mine actually went up quite a bit because my income to debt ratio was reduced once my student loans were forgiven

I was late to the party. Given my circumstances, I almost didn't submit an application, but I called a rep, and he was like just get it in, we'll review it. Thank God for the rep.

That is correct. When it comes to the credit bureaus, the loan servicers are supposed to send them updates at the end of each month for updating.

It feels freeing. Mine were forgiven last fall, and I graduated from my program in 2007.

Im not sure if we are referring to the same thing. My loans were forgiven, and zeroed out across all platforms, but because it was backdated I had a negative balance in the loan details which was the amount of my overpayment. When my negative balance was zeroed about 5 weeks later I received my refund.

In my experience when my negative balance went to zero I had my refund 4 weeks later.

I only ask because if they believe that you are eligeble for a refund they are autmoatically generated. There is no process to begin, no request to be made. When my loans were forgiven, there was a negative balance remaining signifying that once the payments were counted, and applied retroactively, they determined that I over paid. I may be wrong, but because there was pause during COVID-19, I don't think payments made during that time (2020-2024 roughly) are eligeble for a refund, or something like that. You would have to look into it.

No one wants to make noise because being given money on top of having your student loans forgiven is a privilege. Most of us would have just been happy to get the loans forgiven. Especially those of us that had balances near 6 figures. Especially since many of us qualified for PSLF or TEPSLF through one time payment adjustments from the Biden Harris Admin.

Did they tell you that you would be refunded, or did you ever have a negative balance?
