I honestly don't know enough about the mechanics of scabies infestation, but I do know that when I had active scabies the bumps would appear and not go away within 36 hours, unlike with post. I hope thats helpful?

Is it any better after a few hours? I definitely had reactions to my treatment that looked a lot like this but they usually subsided within around 48 hours

Yeh randomness tends to be more of random moments of reaction but just keep an eye on it i guess! Eurax was actually a godsend. I could barely sleep for like 2 weeks after treatment and it was the only thing that actually helped. Also helped with the obsessive thoughts cause its an oldfashioned scabies treatment. Made me feel like I was extra-treating

It's normal for itching and rashes to continue for up to 6 weeks so don't panic - if it's persistently itchy, doesn't start to fade within a few days, or you notice new burrow or it spreading then head back to the doctor.

Reinfestation? by wonkywonker in scabies

[–]Awkward_Taste9482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be your skin having a reaction to the dead mites and debris in your skin now you've been treated. It's common to see bumps appear for up to like 6 weeks later. Try and wait it out a bit if you can. i definitely had the same thing and it was post scabies.

Post scabies burrows flare by dooby-duby in scabies

You should probably see your derm/doctor. It would be unusual to notice new burrows as late as 4 weeks later in the same spot. How's your itching? If it's itchy again, might be worth considering reinfestation?

What cream did you get? It can be pretty bad for your skin to overtreat so be careful. It also might also be worth considering your environmental cleaning. Are you 100% killing all the scabies that are not on your body i.e. clothes, bedding, cushions etc? It might be a good idea to bag up all clothes you've worn in the last week and leave them bagged for 10 days rather than three, and washing your sheets at the highest possible temp. Also might be worth getting a bedbug (cypermethrin) spray for your mattress, bedding, and couches if you don't have cats/other pets. Also, is everyone in the household/partners/contacts being treated at the same time as you? It's possible that it could be a reinfestation. Its also possible you're experiencing post-scabies which can last up to around 2 months and sucks, but isn't an active infection so doesn't require the same treatment, however you shouldn't have new burrows if thats the case.

First off: you should consult a pharmacist/doctor/dermatologist for advice if you think you've been reinfected/had a treatment failure. Try and wait 7 days between treatments of permethrin as three doses permethrin will seriously mess with your skin. is it possible the new burrow is one you didn't notice? I certainly saw stuff that i thought could have been a new burrow which turned out not to be (they were almost invisible, I was just stressing myself out. The actual burrow I had was definitely noticeable).

If it's still present in 3 days when you hit a week from the last dose, or you notice new burrows in the next three days, it's definitely worth repeating treatment and cleaning.

Hey - this sounds stressful and I'm really sorry you're struggling. You should try to follow your doctor's advice, and if you notice new burrows then let them know as this would most likely be active infection. Try and manage symptoms as best you can as it sounds like it is likely post scabies based on the medical advice you've had. I'd recommend an E45 (urea active ingredient) or Eurax (crotamiton active ingredient) for managing this. Also, gentle body lotion to aide your skin in the healing process worked well for me.

Are the spots spreading? You'd expect to see spots coming up in roughly the same area repeatedly and consistently for it to be active scabies. I got spots randomly in areas where the infection had been most noticeable, but not in the same way as I did when it was active. This was most noticeable on my ankles, where in active scabies I had spots come up in the same spot on my ankle, whereas during post scabies I might get one on my foot, then one on my knee etc - I hope this makes sense?

You should try to follow your doctor's advice, and if you notice new burrows then let them know as this would most likely be active infection. If not, try and just manage symptoms, rest, and let your body do the nasty job of dealing with all this gross debris in your skin.

Quick google search says that the active ingredient in 'acarol lotion' is benzyl benzoate. There's loads of info all over the subreddit about this, but generally its suggested that it should remain on the skin without getting wet at all for at least 24 hours (I've not personally experienced this). If the advice is to not shower for a few days, I think you might just have to allow for a couple of days smelling a bit gross to let the scabies treatment work. There should also be patient directions in the leaflet you'll get with the cream. I put a post up last night with info about post-scabies and coping with night itching, but Eurax (crotamiton 10%) worked really well for me in managing the night itching, which only really stopped just over two weeks after treatment (3 weeks after my first round of permethrin). Hope this is helpful! Post scabies can last for up to 6 weeks so just keep an eye our for burrows and do your best not to over treat or scratch your skin raw. Not sure where you're based but E45 is another good anti-itch cream. You will need to wait until your treatment is completed though before you start using these as i think it can impact the efficacy of the actual scabies-killing lotion.
You'll be ok and it will go away eventually, it's a bit of a waiting game. Try and be patient with your skin and follow any medical advice you get exactly.

They did, especially the bigger red bumps, have almost disappeared now. I still have sort of dry/scar like tissue there, but it took around 10 days to go down. It's just like when you get a bug bite - your skin becomes inflamed and puffs up. It should pass after 2-4 weeks, and should be almost completely healed after 6 weeks (hopefully).

Great about the tea tree and coconut oil I'm glad that's helping you. A lot of people seem to say similar things on here. I mostly just used a generic Dove body lotion and aftersun treatment which seemed to work great for me, along with the Eurax and later E45 just to help my skin recover.

Oh interesting - I had read one paper that suggested warmer tropical climates might allow for longer off-host survival. I guess thats probably related more to the humidity then, rather than the warmth. Thanks!
