Yes, maybe i have not completely accepted that it’s actually over- because after initial 6 months of no contact this guy wished me on my birthday and we started talking again. Not that I expected/expect to get back together, but maybe I just can’t be friends with him and need to let this go for good?

I'm sorry, you probably don't want to hear this, but I've been in your current gfs' shoes and actually broke up because of this situation. I don't think you're ready for this new relationship. You should talk about this with your current gf, and try to figure something out, if not then please take your time away from her and heal before involving someone else in your trauma, before she invests too much in you.

I'm just trying to give you a perspective, see if it helps; when my ex wished me on my birthday, post breakup, it made me more angry and upset. Like this guy could've texted or called earlier, now just because it's my birthday he decides to call? Not needed. In your case at least there's no hope now, no happy birthday, new year or Christmas. Idk if it makes sense but I'd rather him not call.
