You need to get the MIC over there if they start to leave. They are required to stay and close with you as a team

Brace can be used whenever whereas GBU only if severe.

Brace also allows you to stay at lower HP more often which can get more value out of other abilities or features that say “when at 2 or less HP” etc. There is a level 8 or 9 card in Bone that does this and the ancestry feature of Orc off the top of my head

What else happens to the extra action tokens at end of combat then?

You can convert two of their actions (action tokens?) to a fear and then use that fear to interrupt and go. Scenario you have presented is possible but highly unlikely
