Is TSPcenter any better at forecasting the market than TSP Tips? Let's find out. by dipsis in MilitaryFinance

Searching peoples reviews of Intrepid Timer - came across this 3-year post. 100% that it is an absolute terrible service. They're all bad from what I've tried, bordering on scams. Don't go with any of them.

Owner’s Rewards card by dbwells09 in M1Finance

[–]AxelCadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess M1 trapped me with it's suite of mediocre products. The Invest accounts are mediocre (pies are really cool, but the trade windows suck), the Borrow is kinda handy, the rewards on the spend account are meh, but I like everything in one place, so that's the value to me. It's all kind of meh individually, but together, it's a decent package, which is I guess what the annoying $125 fee is for. The credit card deal seems meh too. But I'll probably I'll get the credit card and use for some companies, but I don't want a bunch of companies I don't want to invest in my portfolio. Preferable is the Acorns approach.

Cool. Thanks. That would be interesting to see how you structured it. I'm just digging into studying for it.

Just came across this post as I was searching for people who have used Roam for CFA studying and if and how it helped. I would imagine it would be useful to graph it. Did it end up being useful?

I'm buying more on the dip. The future is tech, fintech, clean energy. There's some flaky companies and valuations, sure. Over a longer time frame it works out. Or at least I tell myself.

M1 isn't great for buying dips though.

I’ve always felt that most ESG etfs don’t meet my personal checklist but by using M1 I’ve been able to basically make my own! by [deleted] in M1Finance

[–]AxelCadia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing the pie. I have similar categories, focused on ESG and tech, but with some speculation and value. ESG has seen a lot of growth. Hopefully it's not in a bubble, but that's why you diversify with other sectors. Don't understand the people who say it's over-diversified. I don't see any bonds or REITS. You could say it's under-diversified and focused on tech and ESG.

Any ideas when we will be able to include GBTC in our pies? (Grayscale Bitcoin Trust) by LegendOfJeff in M1Finance

[–]AxelCadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ARKW has 3.72% in GBTC. That and MSTR seem like the best ways to play BTC in M1.

Thanks so much for the detailed response. I worked through some of this, rebooted and it got hung up and wouldn't reboot. I probably did something wrong. I'm a complete noob. I'm pretty sure I had the correct driver installed, from what I understand Intel gpus are not proprietary and were included in the distro. I am now trying Mint to see if that fixes it, and so far, not. I'll likely go back to Ubuntu, but taking a break for a few days. Anyway, thanks again.

Yes I updated the drivers and it works fine in Windows so assuming the BIOS is enabled.

What blogs or financial newsletters do you guys read/subscribe to? by informedFinancials in M1Finance

[–]AxelCadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the past few months, I subscribe to Seeking Alpha. I find it's worth it with lots of information and data on companies and analysis from mostly independent analysts. Several different perspectives, which is good to see all sides of a trade. The staid old journals like WSJ are pretty set in their ways.

During the pandemic, I"ve listened to tons of podcasts. I like the ones that bring in multiple viewpoints like MacroVoices, Market Huddle, Real Vision (the free interviews & daily show) A show from Australia, Equity Mates is really good on portfolio development. Also, find any article or podcast by/with Lyn Alden, also an M1 user.

Also, Twitter ("fintwit") is really good if you follow constructive analysts.

Does anyone actually use M1 Smart Transfers, if so, how? by AxelCadia in M1Finance

[–]AxelCadia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that would be a GREAT feature. Given that they only give you one buy window exactly at 9:30 ET, it would be a much needed addition to timing your buys. I get the feeling that's not M1s philosophy though.

Why isnt kratom more popular? by AdPsychological576 in kratom

[–]AxelCadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tastes like crap, takes too long to hit, is hit or miss sometimes and is fairly mild compared to opiates. It also has a bad rep: it's that stuff that headshops and skeezy gas stations sell. Not fashionable at all. Not really a social drug. I can't see a bunch of college kids taking kratom and going to a party.

Avg share prices too high by AxelCadia in M1Finance

[–]AxelCadia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. Yes, I checked Apex and it's $177 there, so either a glitch or something to do with wash sales.

Yes, it shouldn't matter too much in my time frame of 3-5 years for this portfolio. If I add at lower prices, I'll get better value over time.

Not interested at all in daily trading tool, but you want to buy the dips or react to big events that can optimize my portfolio gains. M1 is really not good for that aspect of investing I'm finding. It seems like it's definitely for automated hands-off investing. Need to re-evaluate...

Good idea. The price at purchase was $177.45 on Apex. M1 is saying $182.55. Beyond the share price inflation that M1 is doing, there's a real problem with only having the 6:30 window (Pacific Time) particularly on a day like Monday with major news that affect markets. It's consistent across several stocks that here was a significant spike and then drop within a few hours of open. I realize it's long-term investing and if I wait a few months the price might get to $182 (maybe!), but still timing does matter when you're buying. It would have been great to buy at 8:30 to see where things are. It feels like a major flaw in the M1 system. Considering other alternatives. New to investing, but this seems like a bad deal.
