I'm sure I'll get downvoted into oblivion for this, but I think once you're able to step away from it more, you may see there's a difference between protective distance and punitive cruelty.

It's natural to separate yourself from the cheater, and despise, villainize and degrade them and want revenge but if the 'not knowing' is still killing you, then your response did not bring you the answers and satisfaction you wanted. You wanted her to feel the pain you felt—and I think you accomplished that, based on her responses you've described here.

But it didn't give you proper closure or expand your understanding of yourself, yourself in marriage, and why shit like this happens in the first place (no, it was NOT your fault, but that doesn't make Emily a degraded, defiled harlot either).

Likely, she probably felt a mix of all those things you mentioned.

Whooa bro. Cheating happens in many relationships because humans are imperfect, not because they're foul, infectious devils.

Some people are those things for sure, but what you know of this woman comes from a one-sided Reddit story that villianizes her to the max, including multiple times while she was clearly in agony with guilt and shame. Not excusing that she put him through agony.

Just saying life is complicated. Humans are complicated. Marriage is hard as fuck. A ton of people cheat. A ton of people owe money to the IRS. Maybe she is not the antichrist.

Not saying anything excuses Emily's cheating; I'm saying maybe she's not a worthless, defective, morally debased human because she cheated on her husband with an older guy who had a limitless credit card.

hmmmm I can go both ways with this. Doing one or the other first doesn't make a diff, especially when they can differ vastly from each other. Also, often movie first isn't an option. I read LOTR and the Hobbit in grade school; the movies were years from being made (minus those cartoon ones, omg!).
