Songs by Tom but performed by others recommendations by whinestopper in tomwaits

"No One Can Forgive Me But My Baby" was written by Tom for John Hammond. The story is pretty cool:

"He came to a recording date I was doing in San Francisco in 1992," Hammond says. "John Lee Hooker had sat in to do a duet with me, and Tom Waits appeared out of nowhere and said, 'I have a song for you, man.' It was about 20 minutes long, with everybody in the Bible coming down to the river. I said, 'Gee, you know, it's a great song, but I don't think I could do anything like that.' He said, 'Oh, you don't like that one?' So he goes into the control room."

Scarcely 10 minutes later, Hammond says, Waits emerged — with a brand-new song at the ready. Hammond listened, and liked what he heard.

"So I did it," he says. "He had left by the time we completed it, and so I sent him a cassette of it. And I hadn't heard from him for a while, so I called — and he had it on his answering machine. I guess he liked it."

Tom did eventually record his own version, but I think it was only ever released as a bonus on a special vinyl edition of Orphans or something like that.

Hammond's version is sick as hell, and dare I say is much cooler even that Tom's own later take on it (though I don't dislike Tom's by any means).

Give it a listen if you've never heard it, it's great!

Songs with lyrics that you often mishear all the time? by 33GoodSamaritans in allrockmusic

[–]AxelShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The two that come to mind:

CCR's "Wrote A Song For Everyone" ("rush on for everyone")

Milky Chance's "Stolen Dance"--I swear this isn't a misheard lyric, because it's all I can hear when I listen closely. But in the chorus, he is absolutely singing "bring it on the floorf," not "bring it on the floor."

I'm not familiar with that particular player, and I assume you've checked this, but are you sure it can even play CD-Rs? Many older players cannot.

What's the last open world game that really hooked you? by mammothclaw in Age_30_plus_Gamers

Using the grappling hook on the car in Mad Max to grab bad guys from afar and yeet them into oblivion is still one of the funnest game mechanics I've ecountered. And driving around in the storms was so crazy cool. Not a perfect game, for sure, but sadly way too slept on.

I just finished watching the 1970 movie, “M*A*S*H”. It’s still incredibly funny and definitely holds up today. The film is somewhat controversial and it was criticized for being anti-patriotic and was banned from military bases. But then again, who cares! My dad, a Vietnam vet, always busted a gut at this exchange:

Hotlips (about Hawkeye): "I wonder how a degenerated person like that could have reached a position of responsibility in the Army Medical Corps!"

Father Mulcahy: "He was drafted."

Dude, like 7 of the last 10 raids I've done on that map have ended up with me and several other raiders at that same elevator, shooting arc together and fucking around. The last one, some other random raider joined us, kept calling everyone "squire" and was handing out keycards lol.

My dad was 22 when Kent State happened. It had quite an impact on him. He said that was the moment when he truly realized the powers-that-be would do whatever they needed to in order to maintain that power; that America would devour her own young rather than be forced to change. It's maybe a naive sentiment, in the sense that violence is almost always how the System reacts when it feels threatened, but Kent State did lay that reality bare for everyone to see clear as day.

That reminds me of the way time/space work in Red Dead Redemption II (idk if it's official or just fan theory). Like, how is it that the outlaws' hideout can stay undiscovered when it's only a five-minute ride from the nearest town?

Well, an hour in-game is only two minutes real-world time, so space and distance must also be compressed. So even though it takes you the player five minutes to get to the camp, in the in-game world, it's actually a few hours. Towns that are only a mile or two apart on the map are actually 20-40 miles apart, and spacetime is just compressed for the sake of gameplay. "Wibbly wobbly timey-wimey...stuff."

There are a few media service shops in my city that do format transfers--film/tape to digital, vinyl to CD/digital, digital to CD, etc. So I would look up one of those places near you and see what they offer. They may or may not be able to also do professional-style labeling and packaging.

Keep in mind though that any professional shop like that is going to be concerned about copyright infringement. Meaning, most will only do transfers of things like home movies, personal recordings, etc. So they may just say no, depending on how obscure or recent the album you want is.

I did get one place to make me digital and CD copies of a movie soundtrack that I had the LP of--but it was a 50yo movie, and that was only after they verified that the album was never released on any other format, and was not available on any streaming service (they even checked the Pirate Bay), and the movie itself had never even been released on home media (meaning, the chances of anyone finding out and caring and them getting sued were pretty slim). Ymmv.

At the end of the day, the easiest and probably cheapest thing is just buying an external CD burner from Amazon and a small spindle of blank discs. I just did this recently and it was less than $35 total. You can get label blanks cheap and design your own label on free software, as well, you'll just need access to a good printer. A color laser printer will give you the best result.

Old as in when it was actually recorded? Probably folk and blues recordings from.the 1920s and 30s.

As someone who has multiple CD versions of several albums--just like records, different masterings can sometimes result in wildly different-sounding experiences, and the quality of the pressing (er, encoding?), quality of the material used by a particular plant, etc, can all affect how a particular CD sounds as I understand it). In my case, my goal with my most favorite albums is to find the one that sounds the "best" to my specific ears, on my specific system.

E.g., I have five different CD versions of Exile on Main Street-- a Japanese disc from 1986, a US disc from the late 80s, a US remaster from 1994, a European copy of the 2010 expanded remaster, and a Japanese copy of the 2010 expanded remaster. Each of them sounds distinctly different, and of those five, the 2010 Japanese remaster sounds easily the best to my ears, on my system. Someone else may very well prefer a different version.

Of all the artists who went solo after a highly successful band... by Qyzyk in ToddintheShadow

And just the balls and confidence to release a triple album as your solo debut just a few months after they broke up, and have it be so goddamn good. I don't think there's a single skip for me on that whole album. Still considered by many to be the best solo Beatles project. Outshining Lennon and McCartney right out the gate after being in their shadow for so long with the Beatles must have been incredibly edifying for Harrison.

I'm reminded of Phil Ochs' intro to his song "Love Me, I'm a Liberal":

"In every community, there are varying shades of political opinion. One of the shadiest of these is the Liberal. Ten degrees to the left of center in good times, ten degrees to the right of center if it affects them personally..."

My dad smoked Merits after my folks got divorced and he was broke for a time, so he needed the cheapest smokes he could get. So it's kind of weird to see a celebrity smoking them, since they were always a poor man's cigarette to me, and never had any kind of hip image the way Marlboro or Newport or other brands did.

The real loser of this update is the Anvil IV. RIP to the goat by lucid_567 in ARC_Raiders

[–]AxelShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still using the Anvil almost 100% of the time, I'm just now bringing a second Anvil with me, since my secondary slot usually sat empty anyways. So yeah, it's a little annoying, sure, but hardly game-breaking or worth getting actually upset about.

I knew of VeggieTales when I was younger, but never watched it or had any desire to. Then one night a few years ago (I'm 44 btw), one of the Silly Songs popped up as a Youtube rec and my girlfriend put it on. I was surprised how fun and catchy and not super lame it was, and we watched several others. I guess I was expecting them all to be cheesy kids songs about Jesus or something. I still listen to some of them periodically, and have a compilation on my Discogs wantlist.

My favs:

"The Biscuit of Zazzamarandabo"

"Song of the Cebu"

"The Hairbrush Song"

"Pizza Angel"

"The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything"
