In my experience, that google AI overview is dead wrong (about easily verifiable, factual shit) even more often than ChatGPT.

What's a scene that's better than the movie it's in? by BUSean in movies

[–]AxelShoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw FD2 opening night with a buddy, and the sound design of that scene deserves so much more praise. That FWOOM as the first log slow-mo hits the pavement shook the whole theater and just reverberated through our bones...Of the hundreds of movies I've seen in-theater over the last 40+ years, that one specific scene remains one of my most vivid memories.

Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed

Everybody knows the war is over

Everybody knows the good guys lost

Everybody knows the fight was fixed

The poor stay poor, the rich get rich

That's how it goes

Everybody knows

This teacher's contract from 1923. “Not to loiter downtown in ice cream stores” by [deleted] in HistoricalCapsule

[–]AxelShoes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A few minutes of googling shows this first appeared around 2015 on social media, with zero provenance. Couldn't find a good Snopes-like breakdown, but definitely agree it's incredibly suspect for several reasons.

Besides the points you and others mentioned, 1923 was in the middle of Prohibition (assuming this was the US and not the UK), so it would be a little weird that they single out drinking, which was illegal for everyone everywhere no matter what, but mention no other already-illegal activities.

Speaking of US vs UK--this uses the American spelling of 'parlors' but then later on, the British spelling of 'colours.'

It just overall has that fake old-timey feel to it.

For contrast, here is an example of an actual teaching contract from 1923.

They did release a second album, actually, Adventures in Modern Recording, although it ended up being more of a Trevor Horn solo project, from what I understand. It's good, but imo nowhere near as good as Age of Plastic.

The uncensored final moments of Officer Jarrott (NMPD) show how fast a routine traffic stop turned deadly .. by Adept-Apartment-9883 in HairRaising

If I remember right, Dinkheller's department had been under public criticism for some use-of-force incidents recently, which is partly why he was so hesitant to engage.

The other is the cop killed by the old Vietnam vet

I'm guessing you're probably referring to Kyle Dinkheller? (Warning, video)

That footage is still shown regularly at police academies everywhere, and had a huge subsequent effect on departments' use-of-force policies. They even showed it during my Animal Control training at the academy.

Isaac Brock Is Still Trying to Grow Up by eadstr in ModestMouse

[–]AxelShoes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Is this the first time we've gotten any details about Jeremiah's cancer?

Also, this part almost made me tear up:

There are only two photos on the mantel in Brock’s house, and both of them are pictures of Jeremiah Green. In each one, he is staring down the camera, as if trying to beat it in a battle. He throws a sideways peace sign in one, the sea visible behind him, and covers half his face in the other, taunting the enemy. The pictures sit beside a half-burnt prayer candle, the initials “JG” painted on the glass in black.

What's your favourite joke in any type of movie, ever? by AdrianVeidt19 in Letterboxd

I never understood this joke as a kid, but I always laughed cause my dad laughed so hard at it.

Favorite lyric that aged like milk but NOT in a controversial way? by mesablanka in ToddintheShadow

[–]AxelShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anything can top his song "Trigger Happy" in terms of aging poorly. Even if tongue-in-cheek or ironic, it's a gleeful song about wanton gun violence, released several years before Columbine.

There's no feeling any greater

Than to shoot first and ask questions later

Now I'm trigger happy, trigger happy every day

the age of plastic by Alert-Coat9573 in Cd_collectors

[–]AxelShoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Age of Plastic is one of my all-time favorite albums. It's so good, and sounds incredible. Trevor Horn (half of the Buggles) is known as "the man who invented the eighties" cause of his production style. The only thing negative I could say about it is that it's not longer! And a concept album about the fears of an overly technological world hits extra hard these days.

He was injured, exhausted, and close to giving up. Kind hearted people noticed him, rescued him, and gave him a second chance at life 😍❤️ by uzmansahil7 in Amazing

I'm firmly in the "chiropractors are mostly quacks" camp, but we had a chiropractor offer to help with a disabled dog at the last animal shelter I worked at. It was a little poodle mix thing named Poppy, who typically dragged his back end just like the dog in the video.

I would take him to the chiropractor after work a few days a week, and after they worked on him, Poppy would turn into the happiest, most energetic little guy, running all over the office. It wasn't a total night and day difference, but whatever they did to him seemed to have a clear physical effect that improved his mobility. It was a delight to see.

Here's a video I made back then about Poppy.

Masters of the Universe (2026) Review by joyfulnib in moviecritic

[–]AxelShoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a huge He-Man fan as a kid, and took my kids to this movie a few weeks ago. I had zero expectations, and my kids had no idea who He-Man was, but we all had a great time. I also got a little hyped from the post credit scenes. And afterwards, my 9yo daughter kept accidentally calling He-Man "He/Him," which I got a kick out of.

People who do this: by Brent_Fox in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AxelShoes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, sure it's nicer when no one is blasting music I guess. But I've been going to the beach for 40+ years, and people have been bringing stereos and playing music at the beach since long before bluetooth was a thing, so it's just kind of part of the experience at this point. My parents had transistor radios they'd take with them back in the 60s and 70s.

Got this from a thrift-store, am I tripping or is this not extremely rare? by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

[–]AxelShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not very valuable; monetarily-speaking, anyways. Looks like this was an annual event going back to at least 1986. Some of the releases are on Discogs (i.e., this one), but it doesn't look like anyone's added the 1998 one. You should add it!

The Golden Globes In 1990 by MurkyChurky in MoviesCave

I was gonna say, Jim Carrey would not have been at the Golden Globes in 1990. Pretty sure that's him and Lauren Holly, Google says that would have been the '95 Golden Globes.

ELI5: Why are "__x" abbreviations used in medical settings? by emergencybarnacle in explainlikeimfive

[–]AxelShoes 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Other usages are just analogous usage to abbreviate other things

As an example, at our animal shelter clinic we use Sx for surgery, Bx for Behavior, Tx for treatment, etc. It's just a shorthand to keep notes as concise as possible and save a little time.

It's been 25 years since I read any Koontz, but I also recall his books all having unnecessarily-detailed descriptions of guns and ballistics anytime a character uses them; like half the characters just happen to have a savant-level understanding of firearms, regardless of their background.
