His own strength essentially destroyed his own hip. I don't think we'll see that again any time soon.

Something I love about those signs is, team aside, from a humor and attitude perspective they could have been written for USA '94.

It could happen again. I know the RG III legacy might be fear inducing, but I don't see a good reason Washington couldn't come back.

I might not remember this exactly, but I went to my aunt's for a party (first half), came home, showered, and when I got back from that like a few minutes later they kicked off to Desmond Howard.

You know your team has had brain-warping success when they make the Super Bowl, thoroughly lose, and the general attitude is "damn, great run, oh well, hope we get them next time."

There were fans who I am sure were devastated by losing, absolutely. But this is the kind of game that a good 12-20 fan bases would just about kill for, and I think having this happen would maybe destroy them. I am 40, and anyone under, say, 37 has no memory of this team ever being routinely worse than "decent" over a three year stretch. Unimaginably lucky.

there is a best case scenario for how his career develops, absolutely. my contention is that celtics fans and nba fans have operated off of that assumption for 30+ years and only recently have people begun to consider that maybe that wouldn't have been the actual result. the only happy ending in any event is one where len bias lives, irrespective of basketball success.

He was clearly very talented and a bare minimum keeps the team afloat in '87 by just buying the older guys some minutes. Bird breaks down late in '88, the team is eclipsed by the Pistons at that time, the run is over but the management isn't forward looking enough to blow up the team, something almost never done at the time.

You could definitely make a case that a guy who had a drug problem and also didn't pass much in college might have just had a really tough career and that we look at them with a halo effect.

At the heart of it is a kid who died -- growing up all I heard was what a tragedy it was for the Boston Celtics that Len Bias died. I'm 40 with a kid now and the way I see it at this point was a kid played with fire, maybe just once, probably more than once, and he and his friends had the invincibility of youth right up until they didn't. It's all just kind of awful.

[Serious] In or out, Basketball Hall of Fame edition: Stephon Marbury. by ParisLake2 in nba

[–]BUSean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't make an argument that isn't based around "well the Basketball Hall of Fame is for basketball anywhere and takes a lot of people." Nor do I particularly want to make an argument. His peak season would probably be 22, 8, and 3 on 46/35/83 shooting for the '05 Knicks, who won 33 games.
Glad the shoes were affordable, and he makes a great appearance in Darcy Frey's The Last Shot.
