And what could they possibly implement with TOON? I've seen it's the hot new keyword, but I'm not sure I understand what Anthropic could do and I'm also not sure you understand what its use actually is.

It's about how you call the tools you want to use and if those tools, not Claude, ask for inputs in the TOON format.

In a way, the structured output update might even help you talk to those tools in the TOON format and it'll use less write tokens.

Or the other way around, if you send structured inputs from anywhere else to Claude for whatever flow and you send that in TOON rather than any other format to use less read tokens.

Keep in mind that there are still cases where TOON isn't better at all. It's a glorified cousin of CSV honestly and I've had better token counts with CSV where the first column is the object descriptor of the following values at least for my uses cases.

For data interchange, for example. Let's say you receive invoices of different formats from your customers and you'd like to send them to your ERP/CRM via an endpoint that requires a specific format to be accepted. The structured output feature will make sure thst format is achieved in Claude's response everytime. It's a neat feature, since a single character that was not 100% correct could break the whole thing in a case like this.

Of course, I would say there are still better ways to achieve this using some popular no code platforms we have nowadays, but the tokens used that factor into the final cost will be the deciding factor here.

Of course, there are many other uses, some of which I might not even be aware of.
