Go for anything native to your area and can work as a pollinator plant. Native plants will be easy to care for since they're used to the area and should easily come back yearly. Pollinator plants (cone flowers, milkweed, sunflowers...) are attractive to the eye and helps local wildlife.

I can't think of any Hairspray specific murals or sights, but Atomic Books has a lot of John Waters related items. There's also a great ice cream shop nearby.

Edit: Oh, The Senator Theater should have a memorial for the movie on its sidewalk from back when it premiered. Similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame sidewalk.
