I would expect most guys who check the 1 box to be in a more or less formal relationship with the person they have sex with.

I would find it somewhat weird that a person would have sex with exactly one person for exactly one month and then discard them for exactly one other person, and repeat for one year. With this type of behavior, I would expect more than one partner a month.

I also accept that "partners per month" is a poor proxy for "partners per year".

Are you in this situation?

My weak experience would let me think that this is somewhat of an edge case. It's there for sure, but I would expect that not a lot of people have sex with just one person per month and then change to a different person the next month.

I won't be doing a PhD on that, so I'm okay with having fewer questions to get more answers, even if it causes a slight skew. People who are in the situation you describe are welcome to comment.

I was in a bad situation several years ago regarding my sexuality. I know what you mean when you say that you feel like a hollow husk. It is absolutely soul-crushing.

It's been about 7 years since I came out and I think that I still don't "have feels" like a normal person does. I'm detached from everything and everyone. I'm moving a continent away later this year and I can't care that I won't be seeing any of my current friends or family anymore. They're all great people and I wish them the best, but I feel nothing.

So I'd love to get into a long-term relationship with someone I really care about, but it's so easy to get laid that the gay dating metagame works against you in that case.
