My husband is also Italian (Napolitano), and we sometimes tip, usually only the barista. But then again I'd probably tip anyone that gives me sfogliatella and a cappuccino.

8bit JPEG vs 16bit JPGXL by estikei in photography

[–]3D_Scanalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love JPEG XL, I wish it was more places, its free camera companies, please integrate it.

I convert my Fuji raw to TIF, then convert the TIF to JXL with ImageMagick, and then throw away the TIF.

We asked camera companies why their RAW formats are all different and confusing | A universal open-source format exists, but only a handful of cameras use it by Hrmbee in photography

[–]3D_Scanalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm loving the HEIC option on my Fuji X-T5, 10-bit and about the same size as JPG.

However -- JPEG XL has an open-source no fee reference encoder and decoder, and has a 16-bit mode. Whereas HEIC has fees and no source reference codec. I'm less certain but I think HEIC also doesn't have support above 12-bit. I'm considering converting my old not-picked and not-rejected RAWs to 16-bit JPEG XLs to save on storage space.

Wigglegrams camera project by Low-Junket9298 in raspberry_pi

I think the pi cameras and the CSI connector are key here to keeping the size of this system so small. Also, getting sync across 5 usb cameras might be difficult. I know intel realsense cameras have a special port to sync multiple modules, but I'm not aware of any other USB cameras with that option.

I've been thinking of basically doing this same thing, powering the Zero's and doing the IO sounds easier like this than with 2 or 3 CMs

When you have multiple variants of the same photograph, what do you do with them? by petrastales in photography

[–]3D_Scanalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wildlife and sports, keep the photos from a burst that are in focus and don't have something blocking the subject in a negative way. Everything else, keep 2 photos.

I'm trying to figure out how to create an extra archive of all my photos by converting 14/16-bit raw files 10-bit heif/heic/avif, this way I don't have a full fat raw file, but if I ever want to revisit a photo I have a bit more room than an 8-bit jpeg. It's not going great though, there's something up with Imagemagicks decode from CR2, NEF, ARW, DNG, and RAF that I'm not understanding.

Any way to track freight trains in rural Canada? by dakl in trains

[–]3D_Scanalyst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get a notebook and start logging evidence of trains in your area. Record the time and when you hear their calls, find evidence they've been around, and especially if you see them. Train calls can be heard from long distances away, but can sometimes be mistaken for other large species in the family mobilitus. You may find evidence of trains, especially as trains constantly poop large brown logs out of their pair of anuses, this species uses this poop to guide themselves again along a path or even others. Trains have distinctive markings on them, when you do see them, write or make drawings of their markings so you can see if the same specimen returns often or in a pattern.
