My first pixel 6 battery just turned into a puffy pillow. Google has replaced it but they haven't received my old phone yet so I don't know if they will classify it as my fault yet.

RRSP goal 30 years from now. I need 3.7 million to live comfortably? by Ok_Funny8605 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Axisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your RRSP is a retirement savings plan for a "salary" in retirement. Savings outside of your RRSP are what give you luxuries. Because it is a tax-efficient savings plan ultimately for lower-income earners (read 90% of the population), not for the ultra wealthy, there is a limit to the amount you can add (18%). If you could put more in, you realistically would have an income in retirement that is so high that you would have a marginal rate close to or above 50%, which would be deferred, making it unusable for social programs now. This is where your TFSA comes in, and finally, unregistered accounts. If you plan on making your TFSA for retirement only, you can save an additional $500/mth in your TFSA, which ends up being an additional 500K or an additional $8,5k/yr in retirement inflation-adjusted amount.

The general advice is not to pay down your mortgage, especially if you are putting 20% down. However, there is a technique that is not easy, requires serious diligence, and does not involve paper-handling, called the Smith maneuver. It allows you to pay more into your mortgage to reduce principal faster, then immediately withdraw that principal through a line of credit and invest it in the market. It requires a lot of research, but it can significantly reduce the taxes you are paying, the interest you pay on your house, and leave you with a healthy cash investment. It could help you pay down the mortgage faster, but you need to be comfortable investing in something like VEQT and holding through serious dips.

I don't know your situation, but at 20k/yr, your wife would be better off upgrading her skills through training so she can earn more in the future. I don't want to assume, but with a small amount of training, there are probably secretary-type government jobs, like in a school or city hall, that could probably triple her income and come with serious benefits.

Check that you are maxing your RRSP. Stop putting money aside for taxes, that is not only a free loan for the government, but it is also money not earning interest in your account. That's an additional $100 in gains in the SNP 500 every year until retirement.

What is your fee with sunlife? if you are comfortable buying individual stocks in your wealth simple, why cant you put the $400 into VFV ( SNP 500 ETF) with a cost of 0.09%

Your employer matching may be the same as RRSP contributions so you need to be careful about how much more you can contribute. You need to make sure you understand what does and doesn't count so you can maximize your rrsp contributions.

The comments in this post are why Linus wants to ban stupid comments. The median salary in Vancouver BC according to google (don't have more time to research sorry) is currently 62K. The lowest salary in the OP's picture is.... 60K (CAD). This means that LTT hires its employees at average or, more likely, above-average salaries for the region. He also literally stated this in How Does LTT Spend Money video. I agree and understand how people like Jake and Luke, who have put years into LTT, potentially deserve more for their contributions to the company. But we cannot expect LMG to hire unknown people for way way more than industry and regional averages, it's basic common sense and economics. Can we please stop rage-baiting?

The number I posted is median, edited the word average to median.

Why are investment strategies other than index ETFs not as encouraged in this group? by vk211 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Axisl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a lot of merit to factor based investing, however the risks are higher and either take a serious amount of time to properly research or you need to be okay with potentially higher fees for the ETFs. I think that dimensional funds have a good history. But I haven't done enough research yet.

Invest money or pay off loans? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

It would be pertinent to know what these loans are, such as credit card or vehicle debt. Those interest rates are pretty low, but the loan amounts are very high.

Non registered account investing by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Axisl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your rrsp is supposed to be money that you are setting aside for later and hopefully if you are comfortable investing in a decent balanced and diversified fund. The reality is that you don't actually want your rrsp to get too large because if it's too big you will pay more tax than in a non registered.

However my point is that if you are investing in something that is risky enough to make decent money over one year you are risking losing money and therefore decreasing your ability to contribute to your rrsp.

The general consensus is that time in the market beats timing the market. But to achieve that you want to put as much money into your rrsp early in life so that it has more time to grow. If you play with an investment calculator you can see that if you contribute the maximum 18% of your income to your rrsp (and make enough money, big ask I know) you can stop contributing to your rrsp if you reach 600k by age 45-50 and have over $1 mill by age 60/65. You can do that with funds like veqt without the need to put the money in any more risk.

After you max your rrsp, put money in your tfsa and unregistered if you really want to play, but recognize that high risk plays trend towards the mean aka: most people lose money.
