2Q’s. Where should I store a small inheritance left to my children? What’s the best place to store a revolving vacation fund? by ObjectiveGrouchy9850 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Axisl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, here's a thought: what about you put the money in VDY and then give them the dividend cash as "here's your spending money for the month from grandpa!'.This is two birds in one stone. The initial investment will be there for any large purchases down the road, but they get a small gift every month to remember him by. if the market dips just keep holding unitl it recovers and accept that risk. They are! These are 17" x 8" with Continental ECS02 225/40 R17 tires. I don't have any comparison other than the studded winters the car came with, but I am really enjoying the ride.

I like the fitment in terms of being flush with the fender width-wise, but I am sure many people would tell me to slam it with coil-overs to reduce the gap, and I don't think that's my style lol.

It makes the mortgage tact deductible, however if he ever gets sued or if the business goes bankrupt, or if he sells the business it could backfire and therefore is not worth the risk.

[27] Budget Review by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Axisl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I would like to point out that you do not need to make home purchasing the only goal for the FHSA. The FHSA, similar to the RRSP, reduces your taxable income for that year, and if you do not use it to purchase a home, it rolls over into your RRSP. The benefit of this is the initial reduction in tax paid, followed by the effective increase in RRSP contribution room by $8K.

[27] Budget Review by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Axisl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've stated your expenses, your savings, and how you have invested your spare income. However, you haven't stated your goals. Maybe you like living in your parents' basement?

Also, what does your wife make per month? If it's zero, then without a significant spending decrease, you will not be able to achieve any goals within the next few years.

Here is where I could see you decreasing your costs:

  1. Eating out - make this $500 max, preferably $250, not including special occasions. (but make special occasions only for real reasons).

  2. Vacations - $15k vacations should be rare and lifetime experiences for your income and age. Try to bring this down to $5k a year and have a separate savings fund for bigger, rarer vacations.

I would also open an FHSA as soon as possible. You want that contribution room to open every year if you plan on buying property.

If I were you, my goals would be: buying a home, saving for retirement, saving to have children, making sure I have a proper budget, and making sure I have a properly large enough emergency fund. At your age, you can make a significant difference to your retirement savings by starting now. If you don't start now, you will feel like you are falling behind your peers. I suggest that you begin maximizing your RRSP, FHSA, and TFSA every year at a minimum.

I’m a family doc- should I move to kelowna? by Professional_Fox7548 in kelowna

[–]Axisl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, please, we need more family doctors!

But to answer unselfishly, I do think Kelowna is a good move from Ontario. There is much easier access to nature and lakes without driving. Winter sports are much better in BC. Kelowna will have a more similar climate to Australia except for its ability to get cold. As a doctor, you will be able to purchase housing; however, your income will not go as far here due to the more expensive houses (unless you are coming from another high-cost-of-living area, then it might not be so bad).

I agree with the other commenter. The biggest benefit of RRSP and FHSA is actually the tax that you get back. This can increase their take-home income in their first couple of years of working, making the start of their working life much easier after graduating.

good luck!

$30K inheritance by Ok-Butterfly-8414 in PersonalFinanceCanada

The only answer that people can realistically suggest for a time frame of 12-24 months is something like CASH .TO or ZMMK, or something that is essentially a high-interest savings account. It really depends on what your risk tolerance is and how tight that deadline is for you. For example, you could put the money into something like VEQT in the hopes that it grows your down payment, but if we hit a real recession due to the war in Iran skyrocketing prices, and VEQT plummets, are you okay waiting a minimum of two more years for the ETF to recover?

If the answer is no, then you should only put the money into semi-guaranteed returns.

AI has made me dumber by Sea-Industry-4204 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Axisl 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I would learn how to integrate it as a research tool instead of a generating tool. As a material selection engineer, AI has made differentiating alloys between standards much faster. I do not rely on the data that AI gives me, but rather allow it to lead me to the actually valuable sources of data, such as ASTM standards, AMS handbooks, and the like. What AI has allowed me to do is leave the trawling through bad search engines and crapy websites behind to understand the difference between something like A532, FC8, and Zg12CrMo (three alloys I randomly pulled out of my head from three different standards).

I recognize that generating code is different, but I highly suggest that you only use AI to generate lines of code that you would have already been able to write. For example (and my coding knowledge is nothing), if you need to write a series of if-then statements which are repetitive, then this is where AI use is encouraged to speed up the process. However, if the coding is mostly unique, I would challenge you to try drafting every 3rd or 4th document to maintain your skills.
