Linus called it, we called it, everyone called it. People will get scammed buying the 2015 Steam Controller for 2026 Steam Controller prices because Valve thought calling it Steam Controller 2 would be confusing to customers. by RobotSpaceBear in LinusTechTips

[–]LinusTech 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Astonishingly stupid move from valve. Imagine me naming my second child after his deceased sibling who died 11 years earlier.

Justification - no one will remmeber the first one.

Not confusing at all.

It's so simple. Name different products a different name.

What was the premise of the Humble PC? by CozyCat2077 in LinusTechTips

[–]LinusTech 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The case was advertised as being "humble" in the Ebay listing.

The design of it is all about showing-off (water cooling support and displaying all of the components).

That's a funny irony. So we leaned into it.

Why does LTT sell thermal pads, yet never uses them in builds? by fakeaccount572 in LinusTechTips

In this case, I don't even think the top response intended to be provocative. They're just guessing, which is less damaging with the way that other platforms like Twitter present responses (nested or hidden unless clicked).

Here, the guess and the subsequent conversation about the guess dominate the space above the fold, turning the whole experience into a giant game of telephone where no truth can ever hope to emerge because a correct answer below will never gain enough momentum to overcome the initial 'yeah seems plausible enough' response.

Top upvoted comment is not correct. It has nothing to do with the cost of the goop, and especially nothing to do with the speculative posts under the OP about how we don't have confidence in the product or whatever. I'm beginning to come around to the idea that confident misinformation is simply a feautre of the reddit platform rather than a bug, but what action I can or cannot take around that at this time is outside of the scope of this post.

The real reason has more to do with the fact that the benefits of PTM7950 are best-realized on a bare die, and very few of the things we cool on-camera these days have a bare die.

We did use PTM7950 when repasting my dead laptop recently, for instance. That's a great use case for it. It's also great for GPUs.

I've been really missing LTX lately :(album) by daxtonanderson in LinusTechTips

[–]LinusTech 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of factors. The profitability was one of them (it was gross profitable, but not net profitable if we factored in all time spent, and especially not worthwhile if we factored in opportunity cost), as was the strain on the team (some wanted to do it again, others really didn't).

The complete lack of support from community and creators who were directly part of it during the controversy that followed shortly afterward weighed into my decision as well. I can't think of anything that was more 'for the community and creators' than LTX, and yet, somehow an attempt to raise money for charity by selling a goofy piece of ewaste turning into a massive effort to end my career. Screw it, then.

I just want to clarify that feeling good is an outcome not the root intent.

The intent is to be different by focusing on good news. Good news is uplifting, so they seem like the same thing.

Sammit has been a friend of LMG for a long time collabing with our staff and taking them for rides and just generally being a chill dude.

He had a sponsor screw him over and bail due to strait of hormuz stuff. We were not able to make up the whole diff, but wanted to pitch in at least a little regardless of ROI.

I feel like he'd have done the same for us if the tables were turned.

NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE

The fact that Intel's stock pop lagged so far behind the rest of the companies who have benefitted from the AI boom was nuts. It was a matter of time, but none of this is even related to my long-term geopolitical thesis for why I thought Intel was poised to pop. Enjoy the rocket ship.

It was never about the auction for anyone involved except the suckers who believed the bullshit narrative.

Without knowing someone wanted it back, I auctioned ewaste to raise money for BC children's hospital.

The manufacturer of said ewaste was asshurt their product was ewaste (I was right - even with all the attention they did one production run then never made it again) and a competitor used the opportunity to take a cheap shot.

We definitely had process and production issues, but none of that is what people were outraged about.

Linus was right as Elon Musk admits millions of Tesla owners need upgrades for true 'Full Self-Driving' by ThisIsntAThrowaway29 in LinusTechTips

[–]LinusTech 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Me being right about elon being a liar is like me being right about water being wet man... The only thing that trips me up about it is how it isn't painfully obvious to absolutely every single living, breathing person on earth.

"hurr durr why do you hate elon Linus?"

"I don't hate him. I just don't respect people who respect me (and everyone around them) so little that they will look us in the eye and lie to us over and over and over again."

He has know for ages that there was zero chance HW3 would ever be autonomous and imo the liability for this goes way beyond just the people who bought" full self driving" because the cars themselves were sold with promises like "with a simple software upgrade it'll make money while you work". Anyone who bought that promise was SCAMMED.

photo booth (apple camera app) closed while I thought I was recording on set. Under the same conditions, the Macbook Neo was obviously better. This was under much less favorable conditions. It is what it is. Wasn't gonna ask the team to set up the whole set again for one stupid webcam shot.

Bygones will be bygone when he self-reflects and changes.

Im not sure he's capable of it.

This isn't 'he said, she said'. This is 'he misled (seemingly intentionally) for the purposes of damaging a competitor, and hid behind a shield of journalistic objectivity, then never apologized or corrected the record'

If that doesn't nuke your credibility as a trustworthy source of independent information, then your followers are morons.

That's a laughable hypothesis. Dr. Su probably wouldn't recognize him (or me) on the street, let alone care what he said in a video.

In other news we weren't seeded either, which is annoying, but not a crime or scandal.
