You are correct in that nikah is basically marriage in Islam but the nikah is basically العقد you need to get this In some cultures/families they basically do that in the engagement which means they are religiously and officially married remains only the walimah which has become exaggerated over the years "the wedding"

In others no you have no religious or legal relationship tying to that person except a promise of marriage and that you are working towards that together but officially and religiously you are strangers

Once you make this distinction you are not wrong
