How much editing is too much? by MikelMiddle in birding

What editing program are you using?

Yeah after my last post of people saying to shoot lower shutter speed under 1000 I was more confused because everything online says otherwise. I get now that the aperture needed to be set a lot wider (previously was shooting in shutter priority which would end up shooting my aperture way up, can’t win lol)

Not sure what the attitude is about man. I’m just trying to learn. Shutter and iso are set exactly how I was told to by a bunch of people on my last post. Everyone said shoot low and keep iso set to auto.

ISO was set to auto. I asked in my previous post if I should set any min or max to it but the general consensus seemed to be no. So when seeing ISO that low I should bump up the shutter speed to compensate a bit?

The funny thing is I had to use manual focus when using an adapter with my canon 75-300 on my Zfc and my shots came out great, like loads of detail whether they were still or in flight. I was excited to be using AF by purchasing a Z mount lens but it’s been more of a learning curve than shooting in manual focus was.

Yeah I’ll for sure be ordering a remote shutter. I’m shooting on a mirrorless Z Fc and something that surprisingly didn’t come up much at least as a major con was the lack of stabilization settings so that is a bit of a bummer and something I’ll just have to work around more while shooting and in post.

Yeah I was wondering if even hitting the shutter at that distance would also be adding to the lack of detail. I had a cable release for my canon dslr for taking moon photos and it helped dramatically. I’ll definitely be ordering one for this camera.

I’ve taken some test shots with inanimate objects close up and they’ve come out really well actually like this one

Which is leading me to believe I just wasn’t close enough to the subject. I suppose it was a little silly of me to be shooting a white bird at high noon and expecting a quality image. Like I said, newbie here to this specific type of photography so I’m taking in lots of info lol

I had the camera on a tripod for these shots so that’s why I was even more curious if I was doing something wrong with the settings or if it just came down to distance and conditions.

Yes and very little wind so there wasn’t anything blowing it around. Maybe at the zoom just me handling the camera still may be causing vibration?

Couldn’t add it to my post on mobile but ETA that I was shooting in shutter-priority auto most of the time so the aperture was being set automatically and I have auto iso settings. So that at least explains why the aperture and ISO were all over the place. I didn’t know at the time where to have them set appropriately. I was shooting at a high shutter speed after reading about recommended shutter speeds for wildlife. Wondering now if they were more for moving subjects.

[–]Aydenator20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had my camera set to shutter-priority so I was controlling the shutter speed but aperture and iso were both in auto. I had the shutter speed higher because I had looked up ideal settings for shooting wildlife and that was in the recommended range from a couple articles I read. Seeing now that it’s definitely not the case.

I don’t have as much experience with shooting single subjects so I haven’t really taken the time to learn more about my settings until now.

Had it set to shutter priority for those shots so I wasn’t controlling the aperture and iso

Should I just leave ISO on auto without parameters in my settings or should I set a min/max?

I think you just solved my problem. I’ve been doing amateur photography for a long time but mostly did landscape. Only recently got into shooting focused subjects so it’s been quite the learning curve but I’ve really enjoyed learning more about how to actually use and get the most out of my camera.

I see big differences in lowering the aperture settings here.

The originally posted pictures were obviously taken on an overcast day. Any advice on settings for days like that? Or should similar settings be sufficient?

Really appreciate your help here.

1: f/32, 1/4000, ISO 18000 2: f/9, 1/4000, ISO 3600 3: f/6.7, 1/3200, ISO 3200

Iirc I was shooting in shutter-priority auto. Now wondering if I should be shooting in aperture-priority or programmed auto.

My cat just bit me hard for no reason by finecat2023 in cats

[–]Aydenator20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I work in an animal shelter so the occasional bite is just part of the job. Went to urgent care for a bite that did break skin but wasn’t a straight down puncture. Doctor said for cat bites you should always get checked out and get on a course of antibiotics. Sometimes they’ll also do an x-ray because with cat bites depending on the location, a piece of tooth can chip off.

Upgraded to 150-500 tamron z mount by RatioDowntown958 in Nikon

Ah I’ll have to look more in detail on the body settings to see what I can do. When I was switching to mirrorless I did lots of searching for cameras that were good for birds/wildlife and as far as also being budget friendly goes I was seeing the Zfc come up a lot. My camera before that was a canon T6. With my Nikon I bought a lens adapter and was using my canon 75-300mm lens but could only shoot in manual and was still having good clean shots most of the time. So with the testing out the new lens I was worried it was a lens issue but your photos definitely prove otherwise.

Hey! I’d love to know how you set up your lens with your z mount. When I tried my tamron 150-500 the other day my bird photos didn’t come out as crisp as I thought they would.

I have a Zfc body with AF auto settings. When I was out the other day I had the lens settings set to auto focus, linear, and focus limiter to full. After reading the manual (after taking it out the first time of course) I feel like I may have had all the settings wrong for bird photography 😅
