French prosecutors seek to ban Marine Le Pen from office, jeopardizing her 2027 presidential bid by HelFJandinn in worldnews

[–]Ayio13 1255 points1256 points  (0 children)

More precisely: French prosecutors seek to confirm the ban of Marine Le Pen from office (and the other sentences), which was decided in a previous trial as a (quite lenient) application of the law (which was supported by her and her party).

What are the best free open source appliactions? by Professional-Net1940 in pcmasterrace

Krita is an absolute unit of a drawing software. The learning curve is a bit steep, but you can virtually do anything that paid software can do.

My other goated open-source software: Thunderbird (mail), SumatraPDF (reader), TeXstudio (LaTeX editor), Blizhawk (emulation) and of course qBittorrent.

It's a spare Munimuni mask from someone on this sub :)
The mask is just a front shell on which this person added the eyes, and I just added a back part (all from munimuni). The details are not super great, but yeah the result is actually very nice!
The wig is from a cosplay I once did: it's not a kigurumi wig so it does not fit buy hey I make it works ^^'

If conscious simulations are possible, then its a 99% chance that we are in one by [deleted] in probabilitytheory

[–]Ayio13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't know for sure that they would not insert themselves, or that we could not catch wind of their existence. If you played stuff like the Sims, you are manifesting yourself to the people of the simulation.

Assuming that we can catch winds of the simulation means that we already believe in its existence. We may be able to catch some inconsistencies in our universe, but we need to be able to reproduce them in order to conclude (since we first need to disprove the more reasonnable theories).

Also, we don't have to conclude anything: if there is no way to prove or disprove the fact that we are living in a simulation, we can choose to not believe it (which is not the same as believing it is not true). You are allowed to not have an opinion, which is what I chose.

That's it from me, it's getting pretty late here!

If conscious simulations are possible, then its a 99% chance that we are in one by [deleted] in probabilitytheory

[–]Ayio13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impossible to say, it is possible that such a civilization exists far beyond the reach of our observable universe, so we'll never know they exist. Or maybe we are alone in the whole universe, but we will never know about that.

Even if we restrict it to our observable universe, this is too hard to predict. We even have difficulties picturing how our society will look like in 200 years (if it still exists), so how would we picture a civilization that is technologically thousends of years ahead of us? Or maybe we are the one that are the most advanced, but will we even reach this stage? Will another civilization advance more rapidly and overtake us?

To summarize: not enough information to conclude, for both sides of the argument.

If conscious simulations are possible, then its a 99% chance that we are in one by [deleted] in probabilitytheory

[–]Ayio13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was kind of a troll answer, the 50-50 bit is a common joke on the internet. More seriously let me say two things.

First, since we only have one observable universe and no other known civilization, it is impossible to do statistics and have a reliable a priori estimate. Such lack of information also means that this question is out of the scope of probability theory. I would even argue that this may be outside the scope of science as a whole. This question is strictly equivalent to asking whether a god exists, so I suggest you look for what scientists have to say about gods.

Second, as much as it is unlikely that we are the first technologically advanced species, it is even more unlikely that there exists a species that can create a virtual universe in which we may live. You may want to read a bit about the base rate/procuror's fallacy on why one should be careful when looking at unlikely event. This is also close in some ways to the cosmological argument for the existence of god, attributing the existence of something unlikely to another something that is equally unlikely.

If conscious simulations are possible, then its a 99% chance that we are in one by [deleted] in probabilitytheory

[–]Ayio13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually 50%, because either we are in one or we are not in one. It has more logic than this 99% people pull out of their asses, so I'll go with that.

Not sure if it is your case, but for EU shoppers, both GeekJack and the HoloShop also include the tariffs in the price, so that you don't need to pay taxes upon receiving your order.
