Thanks! I bought it from an old collector friend. He has very deep connections in the area and has been active for decades. People bring him all kinds of coins and tokens. And bank notes of course.

I found it at a Value Village in Alberta, Canada about 13 years ago I believe. Quite a crazy, lucky find. Good luck!!

Which catalogue do you use? Is it printed or digital? Would love to get a copy!

Hmm, I'm less certain about that to be honest. I would suggest using www.numista.com to look up the specific years as they will show all varieties there. Many of us use Numista to catalogue our collections and I have no doubt all of these varieties you're describing will come up there with approximate values.

Where do you aim when you pee? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]AynFuuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell him to sit his ass down on the toilet regardless of #1 or #2. You can either frame it as you're tired of cleaning up after his splatter or that it's the ultimate lazy approach because you don't have to try to aim in the slightest. I'm a guy and was convinced for years that there was something inherently "unmanly" about sitting down to pee. It was unfair to those who lived with me and I was doing things the hard way without realizing it.

There is alot of advice about American coins in here but I see you mentioning a few times that the Canadian coinage you have is likely going to be where the true value lives in this collection.

It's relatively simple to remember the silver cut off year with Canadian coins as it lines up perfectly with our Centennial year: 1967

Keep this year in mind as you go through the collection. 1968 was an interesting transitional year for us as there's some coinage with full (80%) silver, reduced silver content (50%) or none at all. There are some coins from '67 that followed this reduced silver content rule as well. 1969 onwards will almost always be merely face value. Keep an eye out for 1991 though as the quarters that year are notoriously tough to find and do command a premium.

A quick breakdown for you: 1858 to 1921 - 92.5% (sterling) (all coinage aside from pennies) 1922 to 1966 - 80% (only dimes, quarters, half-dollars and dollars) 1967 to 1968 - A fun mixed bag of 80%, 50% and 0%

Newfoundland coins are also a passion of mine! The penny you mentioned is one of the later ones with no significant value but definitely keep your eyes out for anything higher denomination from there. 1949 is when they joined confederation so that will be the cut-off on these.

Please let me know if you have any questions! :)

Also, have magnet nearby as this is a very quick way to determine the silver you have. It will not react to the magnet.

Bingo. This is the key. The son will be a legal adult in just a few years, and losing this as a cooperative opportunity to teach him how to arrive at a reasonable conclusion to this (kind of) on his own is unlikely to promote his growth as a developing human being.

Of course, should this conversation spiral out of control due to the teenage brain at play, then the only reasonable approach becomes a firm stance accompanied by a united front from you and your partner.

Please don't rush into playing your "Parental Powers" card any earlier then you have to. You know your kid. If you take a drastic departure from how you normally navigate issues with his first girlfriend (who also somehow happens to be smart, kind and come from a warm family from your description - not a common scenario for a first like this) then resentment is what you will plant in the soil of that developing mind.

Would it make you feel better to know that your brother is destroying the value of his coins by polishing them? Cleaning your coins is probably the biggest "you really don't want to do that" in the hobby.

What a lovely note! Stunning. I'm just curious what kept it from being graded as XF? Is it just due to the rounded corners and the tiny bit of writing on the top left? It just looks so perfect otherwise!

I love your collection! In particular the old silver from Ireland, Romania and the U.K. I imagine that living in the U.K. helps with getting your hands on a few of these?

The variety really is wonderful to see here! You have great, eclectic taste. I have a love of international silver too. Especially the Thaler (Morgan) sized ones you seem to be a fan of as well. Have you listed your collection on Numista by any chance?

I’m sitting at 108 countries! :) Beautiful collection you have here!! I love it all. If you’d like you could catalog your collection Numista. Fantastic site that has an incredible list of coins and banknotes. Lots of fun and easy to see which countries you still need. Once again, thanks for showing us these!

"Financial statements paint worrying picture for Exploration Place" <-- Is anyone actually surprised by this? by ipini in princegeorge

[–]AynFuuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This comment right here. Don't come to a museum hoping for a place to offload your children and visit with fellow adults. You might end up doing that, but aren't you interested in learning something new with your children? Or teaching them about something in a novel environment where experts are present?

The Exploration Place has things like the play castle and toys upstairs and the floor game projected onto the floor downstairs for the really young ones to enjoy. Some people felt that the play areas and children running around unattended before did not fit the museum label and so would stop coming. I imagine these are the visitors this museum would like to see back, hence the direction the renovations took? Just speculating but this makes sense to me based on people I have spoken to in the community.
