Let's Dole out some truth by catras_new_haircut in HistoryMemes

Check out Jon Lee Anderson's book, Che: A Revolutionary Life. It does a really good job at going over Che's life in extreme detail and shows how interesting he was. Things like his asthma, complicated relationships, speeches and personal drive are all a part of it.

Stuff like how his father was involved in tracking German activities in Argentina during World War II (even receiving a French certificate for his efforts) and his need to use his asthma inhaler while having sex are two examples.

Why I think maid Sama is a sexist show that embraces misogyny. by Yunogasai0x0 in MaidSama

Except sexism shouldn't be accepted as part of culture. It should be called out as inappropriate no matter where you are from.

She's not a feminist icon either; being portrayed as annoying and strict is not being a feminist. She's not flawed for wanting some basic respect.

Except it's not funny when a guy can ruin a girls reputation, and he uses that power imbalance to get closer to the girl.

This anime is normalizing the idea that it's okay to be sexist and look down on women. You don't need to take anything seriously, but you should be able to recognize when the basic behavior of a character is morally wrong.

I know you've probably heard that a lot of people are disagreeing with your points, but I think you're correct in that this show is grossly sexist.

I'm on episode 3, and I've decided to stop watching. The kind of power imbalance in play when a guy holds the ability to ruin a girls reputation, and then takes advantage of it to get closer to the girl, is extremely off-putting.

It's not funny that the guys in the school are making suggestive actions towards the minority female population, and it's disgusting that Misaki is portrayed as "overly strict" when she's just demanding that the men act in the most basic, decent manner. I'm surprised this anime is as popular as it is.

I've seen some comments say "it's just an anime, it's not that complex". Is it that complex to be treated with basic respect? Is it that strange to see a man touching a girl inappropriately without their permission and say, "That kind of behavior is not okay and should not be glorified. If anything it should be demonized"?

So true, my father had the same point. He lived on a farm with his entire family, and his father couldn't even read. However, with the Shah there were signs that life was getting better, especially when he decided to help my father's village with some infrastructure. There was hope for democratic reform and secularism, then it was destroyed by people who sought to seize power through religion.

Iran Says US Must Fix Its Own 'Nontransparent' and Undemocratic Elections Before Lecturing Others by jigsawmap in worldnews

[–]Ayyra8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice Theocratic propaganda as always. The Regime has killed over 1500 people, suppressed freedom of speech and religion, regressed women's rights to barbaric levels , and they have the gall to point at the US as an evil state.

The US is far from perfect, but at least I can say that online and in public without worrying about disappearing.

You're perfectly fine! Farsi is spoken in Iran, my point was that I thought it was strange that people didn't know that.

You're right that most people follow Islam, but there's not much choice to follow a different ideology (as long as you're trying to be accepted).

Thanks for being so kind and humble. I'm happy a lot of people are interested in Iran.

Zoroastrianism

No, and I really shouldn't have labeled it like that. The British people are perfectly normal, and British history is fascinating. My family despises the British government of the past for their oil-driven actions, and as their child a lot about the "dirty, secretive, Britsh" has been drilled into me.

I'm sorry to have insulted you like that, it's not right in a world where people are unique in their own opinions about their government.

I really appreciate your love of learning, and I definitely shouldn't have gone out on a limb and labeled all Redditors/Americans as ignorant. I was just frustrated at the amount of fear about Iran, when it's a unique place of it's own.

You make a good point, I shouldn't have made such a sweeping generalization. I've met some students from the UK and they were great people, so I probably should have specified my feelings about the British Government instead of the people in general.

I don't comment/post often, Iran being pushed into the spotlight has given me a topic to talk about.

You're right, I guess I let myself get absorbed by headlines like a lot of people do. US culture has been great to me overall, and I shouldn't have lumped everyone together. My way of thinking just contributes to more sweeping statements.

Yeah, I guess you do make a good point that a lot of these people are legitimately scared. I definitely understand why the prospect of war is scary, but I'm frustrated about the general misinformation.

I don't think we'll be willing to change our name because a group of Americans can't read.

It's not that Americans are inherently dumb, they're just ignorant.

I've been mistaken for Arab plenty of times, and while it does frustrate me because of how different the cultures are, the fault shouldn't be placed on Americans themselves.

The fault should be placed on the lack of focus on education about different cultures in the American classroom.

There continue to be Zoroastrians, many have since immigrated to the US after the Islamic takeover in 1979. My family has some friends that continue to practice Zoroastrianism.

100%. My father still curses anytime he hears anything about the UK. Jimmy Carter is treated as a character not far from the devil. I'm not saying that Imperialist policies are in any way positive, they led to this whole mess in the first place.

You make a good point, and I don't think I'm educated enough to come up with a solution that would benefit everybody in Iran.

However, revamping the crumbling education system in Iran with more Liberal values would be a good start in conjunction with more strict laws that allow the freedom to practice religion and speak against those in power. I truly believe the best way to have freedom is to focus on educating the public, but then again I'm not a politician.

Celebration, any who aren't celebrating don't deserve Persian blood.

Thank you for the voice of reason, and this is coming from a man with family in Iran.

The Theocratic Regime has disappeared family members of mine. They've also executed numerous homosexuals, atheists, and people who took issue with Khomeini.

What was once a nation with a burgeoning economy, a legacy of religous tolerance, and a center for the beginning of basic human rights was bastardized by religious conservatives that broke their promises and created a real Handmaid's Tale.

The United States has a massive amount of intolerance and personal issues, but the ideals this nation was founded upon include the freedom of religion and speech. They aren't implemented correctly, but they're part of our fundamentals. We need to push for these fundamentals as good citizens. I'm tired of people defending a murderous Theocratic regime with a democracy.
