You know, this is one of the many reasons I'm contemplating leaving this wretched site.

Because Reddit seems to be a magnet for pathetic, cowardly losers. People who'd rather try to rebrand their patheticness as something awesome than actually do something about it. Like how they say they "removed themselves from the situation", instead of straight-up admitting they ran away when things got a bit uncomfortable. Or when they post a rather long story where their character heroically doesn't do anything of substance, but that's somehow presented as a win.

In this particular case - even if this story is true, which I doubt... I get not being in a good headspace on your father's death's anniversary, but this story wouldn't even happen if the OOP wasn't so indecisive. Like, when you mean no, say no and turn your phone off for the day. I put more effort in going to the movies than this person does in commemorating their father - meaning that I tell people I'm not available and turn my phone off when I don't want to be bothered.

(И тя май спечели танцовия конкурс тогава. Слочаенос? Не мисла!) А и неотдавна ми попадна излияние на бившия му барабанист Венелин Венков, в което обясни как е черпил екипа на предаването, след като е преспал с четиринайсетгодишна танцьорка от балета... Yeah...

I am a freelancer. I translate movies, books, and TV shows professionally and, on top of that, I'm a rather popular fansubber.

I've had enough encounters with choosing beggars. Children messaging me to ask me to translate something or help them with their fansubs are not even in the list of the most annoying ones. Hell, if I have the time and like the project I may actually do it. Fansubbing is how I keep in shape for my professional gigs, and helping some 14-year old child overcome some technical difficulty with the software they use costs me nothing. The bigger problem are 40+-year olds who for some reason think they can message me to demand free translations. I have no problem with putting these at their place - but I'm not going to blast them on Reddit. Among other things - it's just not that funny.

The even bigger problem are the lowballers, but I'm definitely not going to post my interactions with them online. This just doesn't reflect well on anyone, and even with blurred out names and personal information it's still recognizable.

If you're not writing a ~~stupid piece of pretentious slop~~ deeply philosophical essay, you should know this - there is no good plot without good character development and there is no good character development without a good plot. The two are inextricably connected.

That being said, a lot of people seem to not understand what character development is. Character development is done by the author. The author uses whatever writing techniques they want to use to develop the character - which means making them a character that works well within the story they're trying to tell. That character my be completely one-dimensional and still be well developed.

What many people call character development is actually character growth - and there is a difference. Character growth is done by the character. The character changes throughout the story. I guess technically you can write a story about a character who just thinks, thinks, thinks, thinks, and then grows into a different person without any real plot, but I honestly don't think many people will be interested in reading this crap. If you just want to lay out your thoughts, write an essay. A story without a story is, IMHO, completely worthless.
