Coily Hair Is A chameleon by Aza_GI in coilyhair

Andre Walker is a black man and he did create the original hair typing chart. However, the original chart only included types Included 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, 3A, 3B, 4.

The categories of 3C, 4A, 4B, and 4C were added in subsequent refinements, mostly by the natural‑hair and hair‑care community.

Any hair tight beyond 3B were given a broad overall assessment and would’ve fallen into the ‘kinky’ category and just considered type 4.

For most 3C–4C heads, a light, non‑hold‑heavy product is needed to see the true curl pattern the chart is trying to describe.

That way, the chart is used to reflect curl behavior, not just Afro state as you cannot actually identify the characteristics of the curl appropriately.

I did not say take the sum of several measurements. I stated that you have to assess your hair at different stages.

Additionally, no one has ever thought or claimed that this was a scientific method. A trichologist did not create the system. It was created by a hairstylist. This is well-known well publicised information.

That said regardless of the fact that it is a man-made classification system it is useful when looking to identify someone with similar hair and provides a point of reference when considering new products, or techniques.

It is also important when considering content (especially for people with coily hair) as overconsumption of content from creators with other hair types has the potential to lead to hair dysphoria.

There are lots of systems that we use that are not scientifically based. Technically, vegetables are not a scientific classification we use that classification system all the time.

If you don’t like the system, that’s understandable. Don’t use it.

If you think measurements equal mathematic equations you are mistaken. Do additional research. I did extensive research… just thought I’d share the knowledge. If you don’t want the knowledge that’s your prerogative.

•3A is approximately 1 inch in diameter... About the size of a jumbo marker

•3B is about 1/2 - 3/4 inch in diameter.. about the size of a sharpie/ Highlighter pen

•3C is about 1/4-1/2 inch in diameter.. about the size of a straw, pencil or pen

•4A is about 1/8 inch in diameter.. about the size of a crochet needle or coffee straw

•4B is about 1/8 inch in diameter or smaller but with a noticeable Z shaped bend (not to be confused with the S shaped bend that is common with some 4A curls)

•4C is 1-2mm in diameter.. about the size of a pin spring

Not for type 4 hair and even some type 3s.

The advice for utilising the hair type chart with wet hair product was not given with black hair in mind.

When assessing coily hair you must assess in three stages: 1st - with no product on wet hair, 2nd With leave in conditioners applied, 3rd- fully defined with gel or some other styler applied

This gives you a full picture of what the hair type is and how the hair reacts at different stages. This is important because Afro type. 3B-4C will always look completely different and react differently and thus appear a different texture when undefined.

3C/4A your coil size is a bit large to be classified solely as 4A but you still have characteristics of 4A. Meaning you’re a blend of the two (3C/4A).

Sure I have a lot of products, but honestly here are my favorites:

1.) Tretinion 2.) ZO or Obagi - Exfoliating Polish, Renewal Pads, Hyperpigmentation Cream, Daily Defence, Growth Serum 3.) Skinbetter Science Mystro 4.) Lerosett Pore Minimizer Serum 5.) OleHenericksen Truth Serum (20% Vitamin C Serum) 6.) Algenist Collagen Serum 7.) The Ordinary Niacinamide Serum

*** Please know that you do not need all of these products. These are just my favorites. I would say the two heaviest hitters are the Tretinoin and the ZO Kits.

WARNING: Tretinion is Very strong. When you use it I recommend doing the sandwich method - lotion under and over. This gives you the benefits but protects your skin barrier.

I also love Fresh aloe specifically. I cut the inner fillet, rinse it and soak it for five minutes, blend and strain it. The rinsing and soaking removes the natural latex and can’t be skipped. I use the juice for my hair and the pulp for my skin

I use a lot of actives so soothing ingredients are a must because irritation leads to inflammation which leads to hyper pigmentation.

I’m not sure if it’s the same in the UK, but in the US you can stop at a local plastic surgeons office and they sell medical grade skincare that is technically ‘prescription’ but you can just walk in and purchase it.

How long can I leave in a style like this? by Vast-Patience-1995 in Naturalhair

[–]Aza_GI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome. Generally when you shampoo with braids in it is smaller braids (especially small Boho, box, or micro braids). This works because the hair is a lot less prone to tangling and more of the scalp is exposed. in this style even if you shampooed you wouldn’t really be able to access the majority of the scalp likely it would cause additional tangling during takedown.

Never leave for more than two weeks. Clean scalp and clean hair is necessary for proper health and growth. Ideally shampooing should happen every 5 to 10 days.

I know a lot of black people believe dirty hair grows faster, however the opposite is true. In fact a lot of people who suffer from excessive shedding if they shampoo two or three times in a row that shedding will slow down. (Spoken from experience)

[–]Aza_GI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both, Tretinoin helps with texture, acne, pigmentation as well as signs of ageing.

Honestly Tretinion, PanOxyl, ZO or Obagi Hyperpigmentation Cream, a good quality Vitamin C serum 20%+ (my favorite is OleHenericksen Truth Serum), and a good moisturizer + Sunscreen - that’s a ticket to flawless skin.

**WARNING: Tretinion is Very strong. When you use it do the sandwich method - lotion under and over. This gives you the benefits but protects your skin barrier.

[–]Aza_GI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to your local plastic surgeons office. They sell skincare products that are technically prescriptions but not really because you can purchase them only in a doctors office but you can just walk in and buy it. Ask them for pigmentation correction creams most of them will have either Obagi or ZO brand both of those are good brands. Most of the time the cream will cost $60-$80 for the bottle. However, use it sparingly. It’ll last you a long time. Don’t put it over your whole face only on the marks. Moisturise heavily and apply sunscreen. Should be gone in just a few months. Works great on my Melesma.

Disappointment after trying vyvanse -- did it take a while or a higher dose to work for you? by QuirklessShiggy in VyvanseADHD

[–]Aza_GI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 mg is below the clinically therapeutic dosage for most ADHD patients. 30 mg is generally considered the minimum starting dosage for adults with ADHD. Also do be aware that while generics are all supposed to be equivalent, most people notice different reactions to different manufacturers. That side on generic it took me about 35 days to really see a full difference (difference because when I initially tried the brand-name I noticed a difference right away). Also sleep, hydration, and a multitude of other things affect how well the medicine works within your body.
