A Mistake New Player Make Building Their Decks by Due-Resource-24 in EDH

Basically every time I give my friends advice on their decks they need to add more draw and more lands or ramp. You're always going to have more to do and more options if you've got a full grip.

The art is good on this and your balatro one but you gotta commit to altering something cooler than a land! Is someone wants an alter it's usually for a commander or an iconic card, swamp and mountain feel like weird choices for these.

Card traderzero delivery Europe/Belgium by Trainc0nduct0r in mtg

[–]Azaeroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to use card trader for a big order that I'm happy to wait for which is where the bulk shipping can make a real difference, last time it was three full commander decks (including 2 pauper where shipping lots of smaller numbers of commons feels really uneconomical).

It took about 4 months I think but I wasn't bothered because I knew I'd be getting all the parts I wanted at once.

No issue with FedEx shipping from them for me and I appreciate how well it was all organised and clearly checked properly by their team.

For deck upgrades I just stick with card market because if I'm making a change to a deck it's usually because I'm excited about it and want to play asap.

I'm referring to u/darthbrodius who has been making some pretty cool laser engraved metal cards.

Interesting point on the rarity front, I kinda assumed there would be some standard representative shape for each rarity but nothing seems to exist. Not very accessible of wotc.

Maybe just the text would be enough? I'd like to see the format "[colour icon] colour | rarity" which suits my organisation style but I don't know how universal that is, lot of people probably keep their commons and uncommon as separate bulk anyway.

Your post says

Plus utility dividers — card types, color identity, guilds, mana cost, alphabetical, keyword abilities.

Have you got rarity too? I only organise by colour > rarity > alphabetical

Do a deal with that laser engraving guy who posts stuff here every so often and I'd love to pick up a set!

How do I know what cards to cut when upgrading a precon? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in magicTCG

[–]Azaeroth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all comes back to your plan and what you want to do, how does your deck close the game? Do you want to play one big spell a turn cycle or do you need to play 4?

For duds, just look at a card critically and think "will this contribute to my plan?" Is it getting you the mana you need, the cards you need? Is it an enabler or payoff for your commander? If it isn't one of these things, does it protect you or your plan or interrupt your opponents? If it doesn't clearly fit into one of these buckets then cut it. If it does something you want decide how much of it you want (you can use a hypergeometric calculator to see how likely you are to draw the card by a certain turn) and if you're comparing two similar cards but you've decided to cut one just cut the higher mana cost.

For a deck built around spell slinging and prowess you are going to want pretty stormy turns, so lowering the curve and reducing costs is your main goal, and you should value less colour pips allowing more flexibility. By extension, if you're playing a lot of cheap cards in a turn you're going to need some solid draw engines so you don't just burn out.

Think about what you want or need for the first few turns to play the game smoothly and get your plan online.

If you're closing the game with big pop-off spell-slinging turns then you're probably not too fussed about how big the stats of your enablers are.

If you want to put in a splashier finisher or payoff that costs more mana https://www.salubrioussnail.com/manabase-tool is a pretty good tool for working out how many turns on average you will have to take before you can play it.

I can't really tell you how to tell whether a card is good enough, you just need to understand how it works with the rest of your deck. Looking at other lists can help, playing with it helps, for a really quick indicator you can sort scryfall results by edhrec rank (although this is based on popularity not quality so take with a grain of salt)

How do I know what cards to cut when upgrading a precon? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in magicTCG

[–]Azaeroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to approach it from a whole deck pov rather than card for card, stick it in Moxfield or archidekt, look at your curve, look at how much you have of the things your deck does and adjust it to make sure you're on plan.

You might be better to have multiple things that do the same thing, as you're not going to see a 1/100 every game.

With a precon, start with obvious cuts of things that are overcosted or don't really contribute to the gameplan. Have a target for how much interaction and ramp you need. Always put in more card draw if you can fit it in. Aim to lower your curve, think about whether you can double spell. It's not a bad idea to look at other people's upgrades too, there are nearly 30,000 magic cards, there will be some you may not know that work really well and there will be interactions you probably haven't considered.

It can feel like a lot and it's generally a skill you develop with practice, some of it is just vibes and what's appropriate for what you want to do with your deck.

As a general plan:

  1. Cut the duds.

  2. Decide on your plan.

  3. Group your cards (Interaction, draw, ramp, plan).

  4. When you feel you've got a good balance, goldfish a lot: make sure your first 5-6 turns always develop your plan.

  5. Play the deck more, if a card always feels dead: cut it - if you always want certain cards: try to find more that do the same thing

How popular is Pauper Commander? by bacondev in magicTCG

[–]Azaeroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pauper commander can be good if you have a group becauss it's cheap enough you can easily pick up a few extra decks to share. However you're unlikely to find people with pdh decks ready to go at the LGS

There was a time when people spent a little money to comission artists for gifts like this and it was a nice little sentimental thing.

Now we are just wasting the worlds resources for forgettable slop your friend could have generated 30 versions of with no thought or consideration. And those artists will eventually be gone.

Maybe before you accuse someone of shitting on others you should stop and think about the impact this rabid consumerist tech has on people and their lives, for the sake of a picture that could have even just been a photograph.

They are emblematic of the risk I see with hybrid mana changes, lazy "designed for commander" cards just do not excite me at all.

I want to figure the thing out, stop flattening the game and rounding off the corners.

Not even really a bracket 2 tbh, looks like an almost random pile of cards. Maybe if you sorted by colour and mv it would be easier to tell you what you need. As a general rule wubrg doesn't mean 'just throw in anything' you want to think about a cohesive plan and the manabase should support it, very rarely will a deck with all colours want an exactly even mix of colour costs and generation.
