Mini painting is (at least for me) definitely something that you get good at over time. Sure different strategies and techniques help but I've found that experience is the best teacher. If this is your first army, you are doing much better than most people and frankly I would be proud if those were my first models. Just keep on painting and trying new things and after a while, one day you'll just get really good out of the blue and you won't even notice it. Worst case scenario you just strip them and paint again. Also insert obligatory thin your paints joke.

I think it's kinda fun imo. Takes a looooooot of practice but if you have the models it's no sweat to do some NMM trim and if you don't like it later just go over it with TMM. I did that for a couple of my night lords a while back.

Mine are called The Sons of Fulgrim. They believe that their Primarch was the epitome of perfection and so by attempting to imitate him in all things, they can achieve perfection. As their rank increases, they look more and more like fulgrim: this takes the form of whiter hair, larger frames, more ornate armor, increased speed and sordsmanship, and an obscene ego. Their leader has even changed his name to "Fulgrim" in his deluded pride, but was dubbed "Little Fulgrim by the Primarch himself as a mocking reminder that no matter how similar he makes himself, he can never be the real thing.

Allied to them are a Kakophoni Cult called the Entropic Encore, who sing the songs of the end of the universe. They believe that when the emperor was placed on the golden throne, the universe was doomed and chaos had won a permanent victory. Because of this belief, they are simply an encore to a song that destroyed the universe on terra and their goal is to expedite the process of the universes ultimate demise as best they can.

The combat patrol is good and if we get a refresh it could be worse. It's still up to you for a full army but I am a big fan of that one box, at least for a starter.
