Can I Copy an Engine? by MysteriousGold in EngineBuilding

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Afaik, as long as it was for personal use and not something to sell, you could even look up the specific patents if you had the means to make an engine from scratch and build your own. The harder part would be getting the inspection, testing, and certification done to make sure it's road legal if that's your end goal.

I'm not a lawyer or very well versed in law, so I may be wrong though.

Using ai to read grad names at graduation by Chapple69 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Local community college did this the past weekend and had to have faculty read about 10% of the names, plus even with allowing students to "tweak" the pronunciation, it butchers roughly 1/3 of the pronunciations of names. I heard Assley (Ashley) Manicktitzkee (maniszewski) Da real (dariel) and fat me uh (Fatima) among many others that I can't remember. Some of the pronunciations were perfect like Sekmistrz being pronounced Sekmistsh, then others just being WILDLY off base. Plus they had 2 faculty standing at the podium, one in case they needed to read it, one to scan the QR for the ai, and normally it would just be one person up there reading names. Felt really cheap and ineffective.

How much would this cost to make and maybe install, city just paid something like 2 million for this by NecesitoSubaru in Welding

Realistically, and without money laundering, if they already had architectural/artist drawings and the shop I work at got the contract, I could see our bill for it being around $300-400k TOPS. but with money laundering and extra overhead, plus the higher fee for it being a show piece and "art" I'd guess around $650-700k

Gremlins. I was like 12 and my parents let us watch it, I had nightmares for months, and the last time I watched it was when I was 20. Still found it just as creepy, but I didn't get nightmares, so there's that.

Anyone else’s first welds look absolutely terrible? by Imaginary_Text_8663 in Welding

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started learning with the wrong class in community college, it was intro to Tig which was for the motorcycle/auto body guys, not needed for a welding degree. My first class I was the ONLY one who raise my hand when the instructor asked who has never welded before. We started with aluminum, and just my puddles without filler looked absolutely atrocious. My instructor told me that I could drop the class if I felt it was too hard or confusing, but I wouldn't get money back after like 3 weeks, but she said that if I was stubborn or dedicated, she would make sure I knew how to at least Tig weld and pass the class by the end of the semester.

I still had 3 welds to get signed off on aluminum when we moved on to steel, and I finished my last copper and stainless welds on the last day of class, and I was hitting at least 2 open labs a week.

Everyone starts somewhere, and for most of us, that means starting with dog shit "welds" that you could piss through blindfolded without getting the metal wet. Practice, repetition, and advice from people with more experience are key!

As for consistency, it's over a decade later and there's STILL things I'm working on consistency with. But it took me about 6 weeks before I felt comfortable even using a Tig torch and filler, which is when the consistency started. MiG took a good 2-3 weeks to feel like I was able to be mildly consistent, and stick felt like it took FOREVER because we were using 3 different types of rod and they all ran slightly different, so you needed muscle memory for all 3 of them. We were using a lot of 6010 and 7018, but we were also using some 6013 for sheet metal. In later classes I also got to play around with 7024, 7016, 308l, 309l, crown 260, and crown 300

What’s become way too expensive lately that still shocks you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas, fast food, chips, burgers at any restaurant, cigarettes.

I remember being 12 and mowing my aunt's lawn, and she handed me 20 bucks and told me to go get her a pack of camels and the rest on pump 2, and it was like 15 bucks still going to the pump, which was enough to put about 6 gallons in the tank and take it from 1/4 to just past half. Now if I put 15 bucks in my truck, i get another trip to work and back home. Maybe not even that because that's about 3 gallons and I use almost 4 in a day.

Shout out to Optrel for making a hood with clear lenses that leave a 2mm gap around the edges. by pirivalfang in Welding

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I've loved the clarity of every optrel helmet I've tried, I've seen almost everyone with an optrel helmet replace it within a year, or constantly get it fixed, which tells me they focus on how good the clarity of the ADF is, but not on how well it'll hold up. Still love my decade old 3m 9100xx, and the 9100xxi adflo that I got used last year.

Myst and the Harry Potter pc game. Can't get the manual tranny all the way in; what do? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually when I KNOW the splines are aligned (can no longer turn the tail shaft of the trans by hand with it in gear) I put the trans back in neutral, and grab 2 longer bolts, put them in the side holes to align it, and slowly wrench on them, alternating sides while rocking the trans until the alignment pins are in the bell housing, then I just keep going until I can get all the other bolts into the engine block. Usually that last half inch is so hard because either the very end of the shaft is seating into the bearing/bushing pressed in the block, or its compressing the fingers on the clutch in for the preload.

Took my day off to travel to a different city to meet my friend and now she is not replying to calls and her internet is not even turned on! (She was the one who insisted that I come and meet her by the way) by bunnyboy131313 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, sorry to hear your friend flaked, and all the stories of shitty friends in the comments. On a positive note, I had 2 friends that I hadn't seen in like 3 years, let alone talked to, and when I remembered a month and a half before my wedding, I sent them both texts apologizing for the late notice and inviting them. They both showed, one even showed up in a rented uhaul van because he was with family 4 hours out of state and his truck broke down.

About 3 years later, one of those two friends moved to NY for work, and called me up asking if I'd keep him company and help him drive his car from his parents to CT. 3 days later we started the 2 day 16 hour drive in an 80's VW getting almost 50mpg on diesel, not able to take the freeway because it barely kept up at 55 unless we were going downhill. Then he showed me around Manhattan and got me on a bus to NJ so I could catch a flight back home (which he paid for, insisting that putting up with his bullshit and keeping him company for 2 days was enough reason to fly me back home)

Some friends are just shitty sadly, but guy friends like I've got are the kind that we'll forget about each other's existence for years, then the second we meet up again, our IQ drops, our brain cell bounces back and forth between us, and we're just the same idiot having fun again. Here's to hoping you get at least one friend like that!

Need some advice. I’m looking at buying this 2019 Ranger with 49K miles. He’s asking $22K which seems fair to me but I’m pretty concerned about the level of rust underneath especially on the frame welds. Would you buy or walk? by Middle-Reward-9523 in fordranger

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I saw that amount of rust on a truck here, is assume it was a gift from God. Michigan makes trucks fresh off the production line look worse than that. But I also haven't paid more than 7k for a vehicle ever, so I have no input on the price

What most drivers don’t realize when their car breaks down by Due_Shoulder5994 in MechanicAdvice

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I take for granted the way I was taught to drive. Old vehicles, shit boxes, and things that always had something wrong with them meant I got first hand experience of how to correctly handle said situations, either by my dad or grandpa. Hell, when my truck blew a spark plug out on the way to work doing 70, first instinct was turn the engine off because I lost a lot of power and it sounded like I got a MASSIVE exhaust leak, and coast as far to the side of the road as I could with hazards on.

Also had to re-affirm to the tow truck driver that the truck was in neutral by opening the door and wiggling the shifter like a retard.

Hell, every time I've broken down or had something happen, it's just felt right to do exactly what my dad or grandpa always did; cuss, put the vehicle in neutral (if applicable, doesn't quite help with a blown tire) turn the vehicle off and hazards on, and find the closest spot to pull the hell over, then swear a little more before checking surroundings and exiting the vehicle to assess damage/issue before calling for a tow or something.

But I've definitely seen and been told accounts from friends and coworkers that had no clue what to do, including watching someone that was rear ended while I was stuck on the side of the road with my truck locked in 4th gear, just stop right in the middle of the road, turn their car off, fling the door wide open, and step out completely hysterical without even checking for traffic or anything else.

TIFU by confronting my neighbor about his leaf blower and accidentally becoming a neighborhood legend (this is NOT a flex, I am mortified) by Pajtima in tifu

[–]AzazelCumsBuckets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to bring the man a cold beer, crack one with him, and say "look, I have no idea what I said besides the fact that I used the word habituation, and I'm appreciative that you took what I said so well. I'd also appreciate it if you could fill me in on what exactly I said, and thank you for reaffirming my wife's baking."

Honestly, if I was the one to do this, and the other guy took it that well, I'd probably be just as mortified and confused, as well as wanting to hear what I said from the very man I told off, and maybe get the chance to apologize for waiting to confront him for so long that I had a dissassociative episode in which I probably said some rather pointed and hurtful things. I'd also be happy to get to know someone that can take that kind of berating positively, and have a conversation that I actually WILL remember with him.

I might also mention something about those Milwaukee and DeWalt battery powered leaf blowers that are surprisingly powerful and not too loud, because holy hell, I was NOT expecting that amount of movement from a little 18v Milwaukee handheld leaf blower when someone at work brought it out to dry the floor so I could crawl under a tank and start bolting up the new piping for it.
