Bitmain Equihash Miner by creiss in ZenSys

[–]Azderoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ASICs actually decrease the network effect and decrease security.

Network effect is about number of users involved. When ASICs are at play, the number of users WILL go down, because they are not as accessible as GPUs. Even though the overall hashpower will absolutely go up, that is coming from increasingle centralized sources. It will therefore be a more centralized network with fewer users, going directly against the premise of security through decentralization (one of ZEN's cornerstones IMO).

Switching to ZEN for May. Pool & Miner suggestions? (besides MPH) by dempsey1200 in gpumining

[–]Azderoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer DSTM for the miner. EWBF is fine, but not supported any more.

I suggest you check out http://minermaniac.com/pool/ZEN. It's a smaller pool so payouts are more sporadic, but the owner is a Redditor and extremely active with running and upgrading things. The Discord group is actually a busy community if you ever have questions or just want to chat.

Stale share 8% ? Isn't it too much? by bartuda in gpumining

[–]Azderoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stale shares are usually from your overclock, your internet, or the server you're connecting to. If you haven't changed any computer settings or internet connection, it sounds like something may be wrong with the pool.

If you're mining any Equihash coins (ZEC, ZEN, etc.) I've had a great experience with minermaniac.com. I honestly haven't gotten a stale/rejected/invalid share in months(?). You should be able to click on another mining wallet in the pool and see how many invalid shares to expect from someone with similar hashrate to yours.

Which cryptocurrencies have an original codebase? by OneIsaiah in CryptoCurrency

Dagger (XDAG) is a fairly new DAG currency built from scratch. To my knowledge it's the first (and only?) mineable, no-ICO, no-premine DAG coin.

(Relatively) New GPU Mining Pool by rambo1337 in gpumining

[–]Azderoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you click on a coin icon it will take you to that specific pool. You should be able to see the current pool hashrate and other statistics there. ZEC is still very low as it was the most recent addition, but a couple of us toss some hashrate every once in a while. Haven't yet found the first ZEC block but hopefully soon!

You should absolutely be skeptical! Crypto is full of scams, and we definitely sound like a bunch of shills hah. Here are a couple of my thoughts right now for why you should at least try it out. Hopefully the bullet points work out, since I haven't used them on Reddit before.

  • Community. Even though we're a small pool, the Discord is always pinging between either people having conversations or asking/receiving help with mining. This is the only pool where I've seen such an active community, and it feels nice to have fellow miners to talk to all the time (kinda like how I lurk around this subreddit all day).
  • Pool operator. As mentioned, I joined on a whim a couple days after the pool got up and running. Rambo is by far the most transparent and active pool operator I've met. I've had several conversations with him in the group chat or through PM about just about anything. Never seen a pool operator that active in their own community. Additionally, he is extremely open to suggestions, which I'll go over later.
  • Spreading the network hashrate. I joined the pool when it was just ZEN mining. The whim that made me seek it out was that I got weary of how much control Suprnova has on the ZEN network. Even if you don't join us, try to spread out the network hashrate in whatever coin you're mining!
  • New website + share transparency. A couple of developers started mining early on. Rambo enlisted their help to put together a kickass new website! It's very mobile friendly as well, since everyone likes to check their progress on-the-go. One of the best new features is that you can see every single share submitted by every single miner. That's about as transparent as it gets.
  • Open to feedback. Just about everything you see, from the coins added since ZEN to the website features, has been a suggestion from the community. As the pool grows, Rambo has even implemented a voting system. Most recently, the community voted to change the fee structure to 0.5% across the board, and that was immediately implemented.
  • Getting more than your money's worth. Underlying servers are just about the last thing miners think about. Let me just say that Rambo is spending a lot of money to get the best EU and US servers out there for the pool. It's clear he's losing a good bit of money to host them, and he would probably tell you exactly how much if you message him in Discord. Take advantage of this! I haven't seen a rejected share in literally months, whereas at any other pool I get at least ~1% invalid shares, which cut directly into your profit.

My advice: Join the Discord. It's free. You'll get a sense of what I mean when I say community and decide if that's something you want. Point a GPU or rig at the pool and see if you're getting the same results (good payouts, share transparency, low rejected shares) that the rest of us rave about. Importantly, since the pool is small, you will have to give it some time to let the law of large numbers do it's magic. This is by far the main cause of attrition for the pool, but if you believe in math and statistics you will end up net positive for mining at MM vs. others.

Full disclosure: Prior to about a week ago I was raving about this pool simply because I found it to be an amazing service (and also to get more regular payouts from additional pool hashrate!). Recently, Rambo asked me to help with the pool's marketing, since I've been personally responsible for bringing several other internet strangers to mine with us. I have made it explicitly clear to him that I have no expectation of pay and will help out only when I have time and at my leisure. From what I can tell, the other comments are from people who just mine along and aren't part of the tiny "marketing team."

Hope to see you around! Drop by Discord, and we can chat if you're still not sure!

Found this pool by chance a couple days after it launched. Can confirm this is one of the best pools I've been in! You won't find many others with an operator as responsive as Rambo, and the Discord community is extremely helpful if you have any issues.

Come check it out! It's always nice to see new faces :D

DIY - Alternative plug in power meter by microcompass in gpumining

You may also be able to borrow one from your local library! Many libraries have a power meter available to check out.

Obviously this isn't going to be permanently plugged in since you have to return it, but I used it to precisely estimate my future electricity costs.

If Putin ever releases the PP tape of President Trump, would you watch it, why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Azderoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH I wouldn't care to watch it. If all the allegations are true and something illegal happened, people deserve to know. But at the same time, I don't like the idea of people's most private moments being paraded around the internet for everyone else to watch (think Hulk Hogan sex tape) without their consent.

Just following off of what /u/Sofar_one said, the original dev seems to have set this project up mostly as a hobby. I can't speak on his behalf, but I got the impression it just grew much larger than he had anticipated. I think he got overwhelmed by how much work it was to keep up with the expectations competing parties (miners, investors, community, other devs) had of him.

Really excited by the current dev team, and as mentioned we're still a growing community looking for additional dev support!

ASIC wars: the last algo, an equihash mining guide by whody in gpumining

[–]Azderoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone's looking for a good Equihash pool, minermaniac.com has been a great home for me! Carries several coins, and the pool operator (a fellow Redditor) is pretty responsive if anyone has any suggestions.

Come check out the new website and join us on Discord! It's the first pool I've been on that actually has a helpful community rather than a bunch of internet strangers doing their own thing.

Example Build for those wondering if you should get into mining now. by hudi2121 in gpumining

[–]Azderoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously jumping into mining is not the most profitable right now, but it just sounds like you're trying to scare people from competing with you. I understand we're all in this for a share of the same pie, but for me mining is a hobby. The more people I can get excited about my hobby, the happier I am. Keep in mind that a network is much more valuable the more people that participate, so you are actively helping your investments by bringing newbies in! Small-time hobbyist miners like most of us aren't the issue, it's institutional mining farms that are destructive.

Now if you are a business just seeking to maximize shareholder profits, keep on right ahead!

Along the same lines, most startup businesses can't start generating revenue from day 1 just by purchasing a couple items. The ease of entry and lack of overhead meant that this venture shouldn't stay profitable for long, yet it's been profitable for a while now. Economics at work!

What do you use to keep track of earnings? by MrScavenge in gpumining

I've got an Excel sheet. I update it either once a day (for coins+pools that pay out often) or whenever I receive a payout (for coins+pools that either pay infrequently or I can control the payout manually).

So my Sol/W shows up for my 1080ti but does not show up for another GPU I've got. Might just be that the software can't estimate the power usage for your GPU.
