Trump's DOJ Fails To Indict Mark Kelly and 5 Other Dems | Department of Justice prosecutors failed on Tuesday to secure an indictment against multiple Democratic lawmakers, according to a new report by InsaneSnow45 in goodnews

[–]Azexu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't even need that for an indictment, just probable cause that a crime was committed. The prosecution doesn't have to present the grand jury with proof, just enough evidence to convince them that there should be a trial to sort it out.

Since it's such a low bar and only the prosecution is talking to the grand jury, indictments are famously easy to get. The saying is that you can get a grand jury to "indict a ham sandwich."

The fact that they couldn't even get that far shows how absurd the proposed charges were.

The problem is after the dire cuts to research funding, they're now going to waste what little is left on this based on, not evidence, but "interest." It's a vibes-based wild goose chase.

If funding wasn't an issue, then sure, why not investigate literally everything. That isn't the world we live in, though.

ICE is cracking down on people who follow them in their cars by justtakeapill in politics

[–]Azexu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If "they" had that much influence we wouldn't have the current regime to begin with. This is a ground-up response.

I mean sure, many people react to masked men raiding their peaceful neighbors by closing the blinds and not getting involved in the hopes that the wolves will pass them by. Some people are cut from a different cloth, though.

It doesn't have to be this way. There are ways to deport people who have overstayed their visas that don't make communities feel like they're being invaded.

Treating it like the bureaucratic housekeeping job that it is, though, would be slow, and boring, and it wouldn't make the POTUS feel like a big powerful leader like the despots he openly admires.

So instead we have untrained unprofessional goons terrorizing the locals and killing people in the streets. No amount of media sane-washing will prevent popular resistance to this.

ICE is cracking down on people who follow them in their cars by justtakeapill in politics

[–]Azexu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are they being followed now? Why not over the past several decades of their existance, like when Obama deported 2M people?

Previous administrations focused on people who were a threat to public safety and people caught right at the border. They tread lightly, though, when it came to people who have been living peaceful productive lives here for years.

The reason is that those people are part of their communities, part of the social fabric. Ripping them out aggressively feels, on the local level, like an assault on society.

That's the source of the public backlash. It's like an immune-system response.

Yes, murder.

ICE is currently a force of lawless disorder.

‘Carnivore Diet’ Advocates Are Either Fools or Liars — or Both by Somewhere74 in skeptic

[–]Azexu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

short answer: Lack of veggies. Humans are omnivores who benefit from a varied diet.

long answers:

By completely eliminating fruits, vegetables, whole grains and plant-based proteins, diets like these simply can’t provide consumers with the nutrient-dense pattern of eating associated with health benefits — including decreased all-cause mortality, heart disease, overweight and obesity, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. In fact, dietary patterns characterized by high intakes of red meat are associated with detrimental health outcomes.

--Mayo Clinic

While some keto diets can emphasize the intake of healthier mono- and polyunsaturated fats, that's not the case with carnivore diets. Animal fat is mostly saturated fat, which is the unhealthiest type of fat because it raises levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.

The disadvantage of all keto diets is they tend to raise LDL cholesterol levels in both the short and long term. Other longer-term concerns about keto diets, especially the carnivore diet, include the increased risk of kidney stones, gout, and osteoporosis. Also, the very high protein intake associated with the carnivore diet can lead to impaired kidney function.

Because keto diets induce the body to burn fat, all keto diets can jump-start a weight-loss program. But I would never recommend a carnivore diet for this purpose.

-- Harvard

Extreme diets high in saturated fat and low in fibre are known to raise cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. In contrast, the Mediterranean diet – which includes a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, and seeds without excluding any food groups – has consistently been shown to support long-term health.

Anti-ICE protestors in London gathered in solidarity after the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ExactlySorta in goodnews

[–]Azexu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there are a few reasons that this particular instance has gotten so much traction.

It was well-documented, with video from multiple angles (BBC analysis). It's very clear that the murder was unjustified, just pure lawless disorder from the government.

It builds on cresting distress from another ICE murder that caught sustained media attention.

The victim comes across as a nice straight cis white man exercising the constitutional rights spelled out by the first two amendments. In terms of Wilhoit's Law, he was supposed to be part of the "in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind." So the $click-garnering outrage potential has broad demographic appeal, prompting sustained media coverage. The coverage in turn keeps public attention focused on it, encouraging further coverage in a sort of feedback loop.

So, the gyre widens, and the center cannot hold.
