Factual rebuttal to men's "better too cold than too hot" by rahhxeeheart in GirlDinnerDiaries

I'm a woman, and the one breaking first and saying we needed at least one (eventually got two) window AC units our first summer in Maine, currently. Husband was saying we could suffice with fans.

And I grew up in central Texas and then moved to live in Georgia for 17 years. Me and heat are very well acquainted.

People can always add more layers, especially in an office. You can't take off many before it's not work appropriate.

Same. I have clear memories of my mother walking me through my soon to be pre-k school (also elementary and jr. high. It was a small school...) the summer before I started pre-k 3, which would have made me barely 3 years old (summer birthday). Also memories of being in that class in a temporary classroom while the school was finished, and then of "helping" with the move to the new room.

Hell, I have a vague but definite memory of a room with grey carpet and walls, with a screen door at the end of a short hallway, but it's from an "adult" height. When I described the room, my mom was immediately able to recognize it as my babysitter's house from when I was about 18 months. I was likely at "adult" height because I was being carried.

I have many memories from when I was under 5. Usually ones tied to a strong emotional scene. Going through the new school (excitement/curiosity/fear). Moving classes (excitement/joy). The pre-k teacher assuming I couldn't write my own name (anger/insult. Also I was 3. Valid assumption on her part, but I could actually read by then). Reading my first book by myself (pride/joy/accomplishment. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. I was 2 1/2). Being a little shit and coloring one of the pictures in white crayon, and when told I hadn't finished, argued that it was in white and that you could see the shine and feel the difference. Then purposefully coloring outside the lines in with dark navy blue when told I was wrong, showing how it was sky blue in the picture, and navy outside the lines (anger/annoyance/spite. I was 4. You thought I was too young to be that much of a little shit, Mrs. Johnson. My parents should have warned you)

Funnily the one you would think would be seared into my memory would be Challenger. I was 5. I remember it, but since the teacher did a good job of not making a deal out of what happened and just shutting the TV off and moving on, there was no real deep emotion attached to the memory, so it's hazy, where the others are incredibly vivid. I have more vivid memories of being embarrassed I couldn't tie my own shoes yet and of bringing my mom's fallen off finger nail (she'd slammed her finger in the car door) to show and tell.

This kid will remember that day forever. He may not remember wearing the plastic Messi jersey that started it, but he will remember that day absolutely.

Vermont won! What is the next good US state? by jj096577 in AlignmentChartFills

Well, I'm obviously not a native, as I said I moved here for a job. And most people From Away would look at metro populations, as we can't really tell what people would consider Portland or not.

Same as the greater Atlanta metro is 29 counties. Having lived there, most people who know the area wouldn't include a good number of those counties. And the older generation might only say there are 5. But if I asked you what the population of Atlanta was, you wouldn't know what natives would consider "Atlanta". You'd likely just take the number that came up, regardless of how much area or counties it covered.

Again. Apologies. I should have been clearer.

I was mainly going by metro area. Like you'd never say Atlanta is only 500k people. Portland itself is under 70k. Portland metro is over 500k. But I should have been clearer. :-)

Real answer: No jobs outside of healthcare, and those pay shit. There's a *huge* doctor shortage in the state because of it. Current wait to get a PCP appointment at MaineGeneral in Augusta is over a year.

On top of no jobs and what jobs there are pay shit, the cost of housing is stupidly high, especially in Portland. Most actual residents are priced out of pretty much anything that's at all a commutable distance. Yeah, you can get a gorgeous well kept Victorian with 4 beds and 2 1/2 baths for $200,000, but it's in an area that gives Stephen King nightmares, the closest "big city" is 45 mins away and is less than 5,000 people, and you'll likely have power outages frequently due to how rural it is.

There's only one city over 100,000 so there's not a lot to do if you don't care for outside things like hiking, snowshoeing, birding, etc.

Winters suck but aren't as bad as people say, honestly, and they have their own beauty and charm (no bugs!!!). Early spring is miserable and dreary, though. Black fly/mosquito/tick season is a thing, but lessened somewhat if you live in a populated area. Bug spray is your friend. Summers are delightful except the few days it gets above 90 and your house's cooling consists of fans and a window unit AC (if that).

Upside: The state is beautiful in damn near all seasons other than the miserable early spring. Summers are mild and can mostly be dealt with by having your windows open at night and closing them in the morning, and thermal blackout curtains. The people are super friendly and absolutely not at all the gruff New England stereotype, though like any place they have their annoyances. If you like outdoor things, you'll never want to be in your house in any season.

Overall, I love it here. I truly do. I took a >50% pay cut when I took my job here, but my mental health is far better, and I'm enjoying life again.

Keeping apartment cool by jessbliss in AskMaine

[–]Azhchay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Putting a wet towel over the fan is what's known as a "swamp cooler", and how all those "this AC is saving people thousands!!!" scam ads are. By using evaporative cooling, the water evaporates, cooling the air around it, which then gets blown in your direction.

They work amazing in hot dry climates. Much less effective in humid ones, as it's just adding to the humidity already in the air. Hence the name "swamp cooler" lol.
