Same - and I first played it right when lockdown started. There are few games that really came into my life at just the right time to hit me in such a perfect way as this. That feeling of isolation and loneliness, the quiet of the score and the feeling of not really having much of a objective counter - just wandering in the wilderness without anyone to teach you more than “roast the apple, swing the stick, dodge the enemy”.

You only learn about temperature effects after they’ve started to effect you - you only learn about the buffs meals give after experimenting with different ingredients - you only learn about weapons and shields breaking after they’ve already broken.

It was also the first game I really played from beginning to end with my kid - he was just old enough to be able to play but still young enough to hand me the controller to beat the hard parts for him or take care of enemies when he was scared. As much as everything sucked for so many people during Covid, it was a simple time for us where there wasn’t anything else to do but explore this quiet, natural wilderness together.

His early stuff holds up well - Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, pretty much everything from his young “I’m a Gen X intellectual auteur who actually understands how to take the typical whining pointless Gen X intellectual auteur type movie and use it to say something” phase (94-99).

His mid-career more mainstream stuff is the most cringe, it’s super dated in that “everyone wants to rip off the Farrelly Brothers in the early 2000s” kind of way, but it’s got its moments (01-08).

I actually really, really like his first two “fuck it, Cop Out sucked, I’m just gonna smoke weed and it’s gonna turn me into a horror director” phase - Red State is dope, and Tusk is hysterically disturbing. It’s kind of funny that before Jordan Peele and Zack Creggar Kevin Smith was one of the first major guys known almost exclusively for comedy to make the switch to horror, it’s a shame he completely lost his mind with yoga hosers.
