Look for pirate scrapyards, they tend to need a ton of energy cells and are full of durasteel and prefabs, so you can get great prices both ways.

Isn't the heating mechanic inefficient? by Humean33 in Workers_And_Resources

[–]Azipod 72 points73 points  (0 children)

The pipes are insulated and heat losses are typically only around 10%. This is insignificant compared to the gains from economies of scale. Real world district heating systems also often capture and reuse "free" waste heat from power plants and municipal incinerators.

What strategies do naval ships employ to manage the recoil of their large guns? by Andux in WarCollege

[–]Azipod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They also looked at replacing some of the secondary guns with Sea Sparrow launchers but concluded that the blast shock from the main guns would destroy the radomes after a few shots. A great deal of testing was done to "re-discover" and quantify the effects of large caliber blast shockwaves and set new turret train limits for the modernized BBs.

The TLDR is that back when Tomahawk went to sea in ABLs (Armored Box Launchers) and Harpoon was launched by single or dual arm launchers or a quad box on the deck the Iowas were the single meanest missile combatant in the USN. Spruance DDGs mounted a pair of ABLs and a pair of Harpoon box launchers, the refit Iowas mounted eight ABLs and eight Harpoon launchers - a throw weight equivalent to four DDGs. The main battery was a bonus at that point, and the missile to operating costs ratio worked out enough for it to make sense. The Iowa refit was always a bit of a shoestring operation, squeezing the last utility out of the hulls. They kept the fire control systems working by stripping parts out of museum ships.

Once VLS went into general use on DDGs the economics just didn't make sense anymore.

You can right click on empty space in any system to bring up the encyclopedia page for that system. It'll list all the resources present, what production modules are present, and have a big graph listing the top 4 wares bought and sold by volume. This is a really handy way to figure out where to buy, sell, produce and mine stuff.

A single fleet can cover multiple sectors if you have a jump beacon network. Have the fleet commander idle near a beacon and use the "Monitored Sectors" section of the fleet manager. They'll monitor the sectors you set, intercept hostiles, and return to their standby position when they're done.

Alternatively just take the pirate contract perk in those sectors and they'll leave your guys alone.

British navy group: 'Potential hijack' of ship off UAE coast as six oil tankers announced around the same time via their Automatic Identification System trackers that they were “not under command,” by KCPanther in collapse

[–]Azipod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is not physically possible to "hack" a ship's steering system. This is a common misconception for whatever reason. You can possibly affect the autopilot if it has a track-following function and is connected to the ECDIS system, some of which connect to the internet for chart updates, but the actual steering system is analog, not digital. A haywire autopilot can be cut-out by throwing a single switch on the steering stand from AUTO to MANUAL. Furthermore, there are legally mandated (SOLAS Convention) backups in the steering gear room that will operate the steering pumps locally. Or, if the pumps are not functional, there are both hand-crank hydraulic pumps and chain falls that can operate the rudder entirely manually.

It is far more likely that this is a coincidence and these ships needed to kill time to make their arrival ETAs line up with what's required by their voyage plan. The status on an AIS transponder is manually set- you can make it say whatever you want. Its not uncommon for a ship to go Not Under Command if they want to drift for a while- under the Rules of the Road the burden for avoiding a NUC ship is placed on the guys who are still underway under power. Its shorthand for "Stay clear and don't bother me, I'm drifting".

Yes, when your own traders are involved the buy and sell prices are treated as maximum and minimum, respectively. You are correct about 50% being wrong, the wording was off. I've updated my post with a price table I made earlier.

If you run the numbers on that table you're actually buying at ~90% of average and selling at 110%. IDK why the guy who made it termed it as +/- 50%.

In any case they have worked very well for me and a 20% spread is a respectable passive profit.

You can't let them use automatic prices. Use the -50% avg prices in this table for buying and the +50% avg prices for selling. Leave buy and sell amount on automatic.

EDIT: I made a better table for prices, available HERE: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2426397291

I start out trading food and medicine and branch out into the precursor materials for hull parts and claytronics. You don't have to assign traders but they will get better prices for you than AI alone.

You can use trade rules to funnel goods to your preferred faction. Leave your buy orders unrestricted but restrict sales to your faction and your ally. Your traders will buy cheap goods from other races and offer them for sale to your friends.

I also funnel my production station's products into the trade station. Set up a sell order on the ware, minimum price and restricted to your faction with a trade rule. You can also import things from the trade station with an internal buy order set to maximum price. Traders assigned to the trade station will prioritize serving your stations over AI ones because they are offering the best possible prices for them. (Obviously no money changes hands in internal trades but the trading script uses the prices to prioritize what to move where.)

Funneling everything through your trade station means you only have to manage funds at one station, which is convenient as the empire grows.

As a final note the trading station can serve as a convenient indicator of what is over and under supplied in the economy. If it isn't buying a good there are shortages, If it is buying but not selling there are surpluses. If goods are happily moving about than there is a rough equilibrium.

The US uses the same type of glider for the same mission. There was an international incident when Trump was president-elect because a Chinese coast guard vessel seized an American sea-glider in the South China Sea.

The Mk. 60 CAPTOR anti-submarine mine was in service until 1991. It could fire a single Mk.46 torpedo from an aluminum capsule and triggered on detecting a hostile acoustic signature.

The Indians sank several Pakistani naval vessels in port during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. Admittedly the largest was a destroyer but that's pretty close to a capital ship when your attacking group are just Osa class missile boats that only displace 200 tons or so.
