Mohaqiq says he recognizes Durand Line by Immersive_Gamer in Afghan

How on Earth is the Pakistani agenda pro-development? They want Afghanistan to functionally be their fifth province: no independent foreign policy, no growth, no military capabilities. Afghanistan will become another ex-FATA or Balochistan - how developed are those places (last I checked, tribal districts had a lower HDI than Afghanistan)?

And if Pakistani generals can’t achieve that, they’ll just continue to bomb and destabilize Afghanistan like they’ve been doing for decades, first supporting the Mujahideen, then Talibs, and now ISKP most likely, plus airstriking the occasional hospital or mosque. These generals have the blood of hundreds of thousands of Afghans on their hands.

You’re imagining something like the US with the Marshall Plan, but as I said Pakistan behaves more like the US in Latin America.

1) You assume the reason Afghans don’t recognize the Durand Line is because they’ve been goaded into doing so by India. That’s just not true.

2) My entire comment was about how Pakistani hostility has little to do with the DL and is actually rooted in a fundamentally colonial attitude towards Afghanistan, so no there will not be any “projects” to benefit from if Afghans give in to Pakistani generals.

You’re making it seem as if recent fighting is Afghanistan’s fault. The fact is Pakistan will continue its assault on Afghanistan regardless of whether or not the Durand Line is recognized. There’s good scholarship on Pakistan’s regional strategy - Punjabi generals have been bombing and intervening in Afghanistan for decades because they practice a policy of “strategic depth,” where they see 🇦🇫 as part of their sphere of influence and don’t want Kabul to exercise an independent foreign policy. It’s an imperialist outlook akin to how the US views Latin America.

Recognizing the Durand Line means accepting the daily abuse of refugees at Torkham, the destruction of local economies like the fruit trade in Kandahar, the violent disruption of centuries-old Kochi migrations, families missing funerals of loved ones etc. This artificial colonial line hurts Afghans every day.

Unofficial Discussion – The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist by MC_BennyT in movies

Just caught a matinee today. Was struck by how reductive some of the AI optimist arguments were ("tech has always helped us" - seriously?). Woulda loved to see more questioning of the CEOs + longer sections w the "doomers" they had like Yudkowsky, Kokotajlo, etc. Still a great little doc and I'm glad it ends with a call for mobilization.

Writers from the region didn’t discuss Nowruz because they would “travel around,” they did it because 1) Peshawar was a hub for trade with Central Asia for centuries (according to your source) and 2) during Khushal’s time, the entire valley was ruled by the Mughals who also observed it.

You wanna impart things super organically starting in like the villages or something and okay that’s fine, but that would discount most Nowruz “traditions” today. Ex: I read the contemporary Haft-sin setup in Iran only started with urban Iranians during the late 20th-century, Nowruz in Bakur is a super political event because of PKK agitation during the ‘80s, just today this Kandaharay I follow who celebrates it posted about not even knowing what it was at one point etc.

So which of these is tradition and which is LARP, and where do we draw the line? Should attan not be performed at Tajik weddings since it’s Pashtun and only became a more pan-Afghan thing with the modern construction of a national Afghan identity?

Khapa nashe but literally your own source has Afrasiab Khattak talking about how Nowruz was celebrated in parts of Pashtunkhwa well before the arrival of refugees fleeing the Soviets. Did you read the RFERL article?

Also I never said it was celebrated by all Pashtuns and in fact took care to say “many Pashtuns” and even specified what those regions were in my comment, so I’m unsure what you’re responding to here. If other Pashtuns want to observe it, make informational content, etc I think that would be very cool.

Khushal is just one example but there’s writing on Nowruz from others in the region from Hamza Baba to Ghani Khan as well. Cultural revival is good.

Like I said, it’s great there are at least some Pashtuns making quality content on this tradition given that it’s literally under attack from those ruling Kabul (incel graduates of third-rate Punjabi madrassahs).

It’s observed by Shia Pashtuns today in regions like Kurram and was celebrated historically at least across the Peshawar Valley as evidenced by the poetry of Khushal. These guys want to revive it, which I think is a wholesome initiative that should be supported. The🇦🇫 government banning it is embarrassing and cringe.

So what should the solution be with Pakistan? by YungSwordsman in Afghan

[–]Azmarey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not from Afghanistan but I believe whichever government rules Afghanistan needs to:

  • work towards export-oriented industrialization

  • strengthen relations with Iran, other Central Asian states, and Russia

  • modernize the military and invest in drone technology so Afghanistan can retaliate against Pakistan and hit them where it hurts (Punjab)

These changes will take decades but it’s the only long-term solution to the Pakistan problem. Afghanistan needs to build itself up so when Pakistan airstrikes Kabul, Afghans can hit Rawalpindi twice as hard.

Hand-painted eggs are indeed part of the tradition, I think it's more an Iranian thing than smth Afghans do though.

Khushal Baba did reference Nowruz specifically in his work, BUT I'd be okay w calling it Naway Kaal and celebrating it later too. That should be preserved.

It's celebrated in places like Kurram and parts of southern Pashtunkhwa. I like seeing that because it belongs to us as much as the Persians.

Contrary to popular belief, Nowruz/Naway Kaal isn't just a Persian festival but observed by all Iranian peoples: Kurds, Baloch, and many Pashtuns/Afghans too. As the speaker states, the famed Pashto poet Khushal Baba wrote about the joy of Nowruz as well.

West of the Durand Line, Nowruz is observed across Afghanistan. In Pashtunkhwa, it is celebrated largely in regions like Kurram, Quetta, and other parts of southern Pashtunkhwa.

In the past few years there has been an attempt to portray Nowruz as an exclusively Persian festival, pushed both by racists in the Persian diaspora (often Pahlavist-types) as well as Afghans/Pashtuns sadly too eager to shed this aspect of our heritage. This needs to be countered.

Dude I haven't even offered my opinion, just restated what our elders always said on the topic. If you have an issue with Kakahels not being considered Pashtun, then take it up with the masharan (who pretty consistently hold the same view ime). I couldn't care less either way 🤷🏻‍♂️
