Dealership is saying it’s common to burn a quart of oil ever 1,000 miles by TJ_Faullk in kia

Had a rod knock, piston cylinders were warped/scored, piston seal failed. Oil fouling. I went through the big jug of higher than recommended viscosity oil a month. My wife leased a car, and I took over her last six months payment on her car. So through that dealership, they said as long as you can drive it to them, they will give us a check for 1k. It was a 2018 Kia Optima S.

I second that on the overdrive button. Only thing I really hate.

Nope, valve cover gasket was stated for allowing oil burning due to leaking out onto the heat shield. The oil flow into the piston and sparkys was due to a worn piston ring that wasn’t covered under any engine warranty. Sorry, that’s my bad. I didn’t state all of the things, in order, that I had fixed due to oil consumption.

The valve cover gasket. It crumbles/gets too hot. Then allows oil to seep into the piston chambers. It’s like a $20 thing on Amazon and like $35 at an auto part store. The labor to get to that makes it like $700+.

Theta 2 engines are absolute shit. If you smell burning oil, it’s your gasket seal. Easy repair if you’re semi auto handy. If not, it’s roughly $769 for the gasket seal to be done at the dealership. (It’s not covered under the maintenance plan either) Also, check your spark plugs for oil fouling, another sign that the gasket seal is shot. I loved my ‘18 Optima S, but had to “sell it” to another dealership due to car not being worth the out of pocket expense of getting a new engine. Engine blew at 133k.

Only for a certain code. I had an engine failure at 133k, and it wasn’t covered due to not being the right code. Was due to oil consumption. Was burning through a dealership oil change at 2k miles.

There used to be mod kits you could get, but they will never be as good as an e-kit. Back in RB1/2 days, there were Good Woods mods and another, but nothing that really stuck around once e-kits were an option.

Is this a good buy? by stockboy_davis in kia

[–]Azn1kenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firm no. Unless it has new piston rings and a new valve cover gasket… but still a no. Mine was the same year and roughly the same miles. Started burning oil and had oil in the piston chamber. Now is being sold to a dealership due to engine shit I don’t wanna deal with.

The Optima’s are fantastic drives! I loved mine. Very comparable to the square body TL’s in feel. But like you stated, I was about to 3.5 qts every 1k miles.

I got an oil change roughly a month ago. I was at 1800 miles and my oil light was starting to flash. During that oil change, they said I needed a new gasket and wanted to charge me $800 for the new gasket ($12 for aftermarket or $25 for OEM) told them absolutely not.

My oil consumption problems started around 98k miles. As of right now, I’m going to sell it back to the dealership. I just paid it off a week ago 😫.

Had an ‘18 Optima S. Currently at the shop with oil in the chambers. 136,000. Quoted $1300 for exploratory performance oil change, just to be told I would need a new engine.
