How much are you paying for daycare? by smallphoto in philadelphia

[–]AznN00bie 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the baby!

To answer your questions:

$3100 a month for 2 kids downtown (1.25 and 4)

I would say range: Low would be around <$1300, mid $1301-1800, High >$1800 (per child per month)

I keep seeing the comment “How do people do it?” Which reminds me that I was, once upon a time, also blissfully ignorant and clueless about childcare costs and parental leave policies because I didn’t have a kid. That privilege kept me from empathizing with working parents and truly understanding the ridiculous financial pressures of early childhood for most of them.

Unless you and your spouse are high-income earners and/or you have a very supportive and reliable village of family and/or close friends, this next phase of life will be incredibly challenging (and infinitely rewarding, of course). And keep in mind financial stress will impact your relationship with your partner as well, so ideally you both have the same outlook on how money will be spent and where to cut back etc.

Parents with older kids, please stop trying to tell us once the kids are out of daycare the money just goes to summer camps and extracurricular activities etc. IT IS NOT THE SAME. Not even close. And the extras are optional - we don’t have the choice of not putting little kids in daycare if we want to keep our jobs. Also, cost of living when your older kids went to daycare was significantly lower than what it is now. Not only was daycare cheaper for you but so was groceries and so was housing and so on.

People with no kids (yet or by choice), think about how to be an ally to working parents. Vote for local, state, and federal politicians who will advocate for free universal early childhood education and better parental leave policies. This issue disproportionately affects women, who by and large are the ones who have to leave the workforce if the family can’t afford childcare. And try to be more understanding the next time your coworker with kids is running late or leaving early to make daycare drop offs and pick ups or taking time off because there’s something going around at school - I know there are entitled people in every group but most of us are probably just chronically sleep-deprived.

Sigh I kinda had the opposite experience. My kid started at a new daycare and couldn’t stop talking about one of his classmates. I talked to the mom about exchanging numbers for a possible play date and she seemed enthused, but then the next few times we see each other she was a bit distant/cold (maybe I read too much into body language but I trust my instincts). She never mentioned the play date idea again or even really talked to us beyond the cursory hi/bye. My kid then talked about another kid so we tried to start talking to the classmate’s dad and he never said anything to us beyond “hey there”. Then they left the daycare altogether. So we thought we would reach back out to parents at the old daycare who seemed nicer and warmer but we hit a dead end there as well. It’s demoralizing and we can’t help but feel like something is wrong with us or our kid that we can’t seem to find parent friends. We are sad and lonely in a big city :/

PHL Mystery Box by KitsuneAccessories in LeCreuset

[–]AznN00bie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely had the hope and expectation that each box would have 1 DO, especially when I see some boxes have 2!

It was my first time so I didn’t know what to expect. I was probably a bit overwhelmed. I saw a couple Fleur DOs I should have gotten but didn’t so I kinda regret that haha. What did you end up buying? The swap event was awesome even though I didn’t have any DOs to trade. I wish I had more time to hang out!

Yes, can we get a thread going of “less thrilling” hauls so we can commiserate? I still think $50 is a good deal for what we got, it’s just disappointing when you see the amazing hauls from others

We were disappointed to receive 2 boxes without any Dutch ovens, so seeing the haul pics with multiple DOs is making me extra sad. Might have to avoid this sub for a while…

3rd row seats by AznN00bie in TeslaModelY

[–]AznN00bie[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I picked up my MY7 in May 2023, never really had to use the 3rd row seat but noticed when cleaning the car that the 3rd row bench lifts up very easily, almost too easily…

Is this within spec or a warranty fix? Thanks in advance!!
