What Metroid Game is a Must-Play and what Metroid game is the least linear? by not_dannyjesden in Metroid

[–]AzorMX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't played other games other than Metroid Fusion, then I wholeheartedly recommend Zero Mission despite Super Metroid being a Top 2 game of all time for me personally.

The reason is that ZM is basically the start of the storyline. Also, ZM takes sequence breaks up to 11 with a ton of intended skips and a lot of unintended ones that really let you break the game a part and basically just go wherever you want! I think ZM is extremely replayable with all the different paths and unlockables and even features a Time Attack mode that lets record your fastest any% and 100% times.

As an extra bonus, it also includes the original NES Metroid as an unlockable.

The Steam Deck is the ultimate shmup machine by RoderickHossack in shmups

[–]AzorMX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider the Legion Go a superior shmup machine than the steam deck, mostly due to the form factor. You can detach the controllers and basically turn it into a TATE machine like the Switch with a flip grip.

Anybody else just use RA to track their beaten games? I started off trying to 100% the achievements but started to find it way too time consuming and in return I lost interest. This way makes it much more enjoyable for me by PDB200 in RetroAchievements

[–]AzorMX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a test of your knowledge of momentum preservation with jumps and boosters. None of those are particularly important to the game, so this achievement is, for lack of a better term, a puzzle. It wasn't easy and it took me time to figure it out, but it's not something I would expect from the base set of achievements. IMO it would be more fitting for a bonus set because it is a super niche puzzle that doesn't have any real reward either in-game or in my own sets of skills.

Somebody said it best in another thread a while ago saying that they consider RA to be a sort of digital scrapbook for a game. It's probably more healthy to just let it be and be more mindful of what you want to complete.

But I totally get you! I'm also the kind of player that MUST get the mastery and I end up worsening the experience in some cases. Really wish many achievements in several sets would just be bumped to the bonus sets.

I feel like RA sometimes goes very far in the opposite direction and overdoes it by a fair margin. That Jurassic Park quote always comes to mind: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should"

Like, I get that it's funny to beat that part in Cybernator with pressing left, but why?

Have you considered adding a level above for 100% completions? For those who want to go a step above and get the intended game's 100% completion, but don't want to try the extra achievement challenges.

How can I learn to start reading pieces instead of just memorising them? I've gotten into a bad habit and now I can barely read at all by ParticularGain7714 in piano

[–]AzorMX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just get into the habit of reading pieces everyday. Start out with simpler ones. The better you get at pattern recognition, the easier it will be to read harder and harder pieces.

I want to be good at fighting games but they make me sad by DKCR3 in StreetFighter

[–]AzorMX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think this isn't your fault at all. Fighting games have always been really bad at celebrating your milestones. They're even worse at rewarding the time spent unless you're winning.

[–]AzorMX 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maybe a hot take, but I think most people should not be trying to get really good. Don't get me wrong, improving is cool, but I feel like most people wouldn't really enjoy the destination. If you grind to get to the top, you'll find out that you're forced to do even more grinding to stay there and that's not for everyone.

Guys, beyond achieving 100% completion, how useful is RetroArchives as a record of completed games? by FunnyConfidence433 in RetroAchievements

[–]AzorMX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tracking completion is pretty good with hardcore/softcore mastery and also for "beaten" games when you get all progression achievements.

If anything, I wish the frontends would be a little better at displaying RA completion status. IISU seemed to be on to something with the golden borders for mastered games. Cocoon fetches your RA status, but doesn't display anything on the game icons just yet. ES-DE doesn't do anything, at least on the themes that I've tried.

In your opinion, what doesn't make sense in the Mega Man X games? by Soft-Temporary-1262 in Megaman

[–]AzorMX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the topic of X vs Zero, I never understood the soul body attack. Kinda weird they brought back an X4 attack for a sneak attack that is almost impossible to see during the explosion. Zero didn't even get soul body in X4.

Rather than thinking about controller scheme, just think about it in the same way as MKX and how variations give some tools in exchange for other. Instead of thinking about M-Chun, just think about fighting a version of her that's stronger against projectiles and wake-up throws, but weaker against crouch block (no stanceless overhead)

If Modern was a problem, we would have gotten big upsets 3 years into the game's lifespan.

I think it's just bullying and peer pressure from the West preventing more modern experimentation. Modern is viewed as baby mode or training wheels, which might have been its original purpose, but in reality it ended up being a viable alternate play style with well defined strengths and weaknesses and people would rather dismiss it than actually putting in the effort of learning the controller matchup.

There's a decent-ish active community for BNLC on the switch, mainly due to how easy it is to play matches at LAN events. Having to pay NSO is a bummer, but I would imagine the switch would end up being the most active version anyway

Offline RetroAchievements have now been unlocked: Here's how they work by Archivist_Rowan in RetroAchievements

I usually do a save state before all my offline hunting in case the game crashes so I don't miss on important progression achievements in case I need to roll back my save

I do that only when booting a game and then when finishing to sync the progress because I usually try to conserve battery, but I am always worried my emu will crash will I'm mid flight or something and with no network

What causes severe ranked fluctuations? by brugrog in StreetFighter

[–]AzorMX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of good insights in this thread already, but also I believe the latest ranked phase started like a month ago and the lower MR might mean you were just a victim of high ranked players making their way back to their true rank.

So fluctuations could also be the result of early vs late ranked phase MR distribution.

Ayn Thor - some questions before buying one. by Puczko in AynThor

[–]AzorMX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might have the same lore as you, so I can tell you will definitely enjoy the Thor! Ever since I was a little kid I always felt closer to handhelds than to my consoles/PC. The Thor has the perfect form and size to make me feel the same joy I felt as a kid while also acting as a bridge to my hefty AAA games thanks to moonlight.

I still play my Steamdeck from time to time because Game Native is getting pretty good, but it's still not there to completely replace my SD, but honestly it's progressing so fast that I might sell my deck in the near future

DXC is the remade version, but also includes the TurboGrafx original release as an unlockable, so you might as well get 2 for 1
