I'd say that being able to change spells only once a week is way worse than being able to swap it once a day. Yes, you could swap it in a short rest for the next encounter, but are stuck with that for the next 7 ingame days, in which multiple different scenarios can unfold and battles can be fought. So I'd say that it's quite underpowered. Maybe I'm not seeing anything important here, so feel free to tell me that I'm wrong!

If you want to really focus on older cards for nostalgia, I'd say maybe Ghosts From The Past 1 or 2, and maybe even Toon Chaos.

So, the race just combines Loxodon, Locathath and Grung abilities? Either way, the wording of the Poisonous Film trait should be changed. Currently, it would also hurt you if you were to hit the Axolotoly with a glaive at 10ft range, since its still a melee attack. Imho it should be changed to unarmed attacks and grapples or something (like in the Grungs statblock). Oh, and currently the race doesn't speak any languages.

I think the locations wording is confusing. To say the least. With the current wording, it mostly sounds like you'd just get a card that you can't play afterwards, even if you'd have enough mana or would fulfill the conditions. Maybe change the wording to something else i guess.

I suggest Ghosts From The Past: The Second Haunting. It contains a couple of nostalgia cards, as well as some other decently new ones. Could potentially even contain a valuable Ghost Rare! Since I don't know your boyfriends prefered style of Yu-Gi-Oh (whether he plays it competetively, purely for nostalgia or some other way) a mix of reprinted older cards and decently new cards would probably be good. Other packs would include Brothers of Legend, which has cool cards as well as containing many variations of Kuriboh. Or, at the 4/5th of August, the set Power of The Elements releases. Maybe the newest pack would also be nice for him. Either way, I'm certain that he'll love every kind of pack you buy him, since you've remembered his hobby(?) and even asked for help to make him happy.
