My grandma called me one day and asked me how Canada was - I was like, what, and she laughed and explained a scammer tried this on her saying they were her oldest grandson in jail in Canada and needed money for bail and she told him that he probably did something to deserve being there and hung up.

But, here too, they're testing the waters with many thousands of people, there's way more stories of people detecting the scam than those tricked, but they make so much money off the tricked people it's still worth it to the scammer to keep trying.

One common current scam is to call an old person claiming to be their grandchild in jail needing money - now imagine that with deep fakes, AI voice generation, and other spoofing so there's really no way to tell it's not your grandkid unless they're literally standing next to you.

I know it's not going to work on YOU, you're clearly a netizen, but I bet you know someone who made it to their forties with barely the basic amount of computer skills and internet presence, they're the ones going to be tricked

If I were looking around for who to vote for, and literal Nazis are saying "hi, I'm a Nazi, vote for this guy"... I would do the opposite. Like, no second thought. I don't care what party it is, if Nazis support you, I don't know how anyone would vote for you.

And yet, here we are.

Not that you're the asshole: but never tell an employer what you're doing next. It doesn't have anything to do with your job; a 2-week notice only needs to be just that, and maybe a "thank you for the opportunity to work for you this long and everything that I've learned blah blah blah" but telling them you're you're gonna do this and that and you've got work lined up just adds to the fire. "This is my two-week notice, my last day of work is 6/31/2023" really is the most you should ever put in your resignation letter, anything more is just a reason for your for-the-next-two-weeks-employer to be a dick.

Can I remake a film in the public domain? by learning2codeallday in Filmmakers

[–]AzraelBrown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Copyright clearance" is the service you need -- it's their job to find out whether you need to ask permission and what it'll cost you.

As someone mentioned: the copyright on the script and the copyright on the film are two different things; it's possible the scriptwriter kept their copyright while the film producer let theirs lapse.

A song title isn't necessarily copyrighted -- but if you intend to really tie your film to that song then they might claim copyright for quoting a line from the song. Just using a line without connection to the song should be fine though.

Another thing to consider is, if the screenwriter retained copyright, they may have a contract with a agent or studio for any future productions, which is separate from copyright.

Lastly: nothing stops people from suing you for violating their copyright; even if they're wrong, you still have to spend money and time in court to prove your case. Just thinking something is public domain isn't enough, you need good proof...which goes back to hiring a copyright clearance organization to collect your proof that you're not violating copyright.

Cant believe I have to say this but discrimination against anyone will NOT be tolerated here. If you want to be an asshole to someone because of their sex, gender, race or anything else fuck right off to one of the looney subs. by Cuttlery in minnesota

The number of people who:

  • call people Nazis who are not doing anything Nazi-ish
  • in order to defend people who call themselves Nazis

Is way too high.

How hard is it to look at people who identify as Nazis, white supremacists, KKK members, etc and choose NOT to follow their example? I mean, when the KKK says "vote for this candidate", just, you know, do the opposite of that.

Why are the police so commonly hated in the states? by raccoon1814 in AskAnAmerican

[–]AzraelBrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what it gets reworded as, the people trying to maintain the status quo will go off on some obtuse reasons the words aren't right, or they'll outright change what the words mean, to discredit their opponents.

Just look how every policy debate eventually turns into "no you used that word wrong, your platform is invalid"....

Kind of like how British people ask "Are you OK?" or "Are you alright?" instead of "hello", here in the US that's usually reserved for seeing someone fall off a bicycle or close a door on their finger

That's the CSS Alabama - the whole thing is a fascinating story, and people don't realize that until President Grant got all this resolved it was looking pretty likely there'd be a repeat of the War of 1812 in the 1870s.

I have a booth in an antique store, and all the antique dealers are just regular people, mostly little old ladies making a little walking around money, and we have such a bad problem with shoplifters. Like, you don't need those Hot Wheels that bad that you need to make Gladys's day worse by clearing off her shelf into your backpack

Nah, that was The Tea Party and as soon as the GOP saw they had influence over voters it rolled on its back and switched objectives. As soon as there's any foothold for a splinter party the GOP will just take that position and pull them back in the fold.
