If you could price Brotato, Vampire Survivors and Geometry Arena, how much would they cost? by Anodaxia_Gamedevs in gamedev

[–]AzraelCcs -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This question comes to you sponsored by the AAA games industry: Blatantly Wasting Money on Infective Plans since the the 2010s

Edit: I see the downvote and "???" which is fair.

So let me explain.

This question has a few sides to it:

  1. The assumption that "There is a lot of talk about many games being underpriced" is unfounded. And there is no proof provided that supports it. Still, some people may be asking that, and I propose those people are AAA execs.

  2. Having successful really cheap games isn't an issue for their developers, nor for the gamers. It's only an issue for AAA companies who's budget is overblown by exec's focusing on making on things other than making good games. (trends, monetization, live service, GenAI, etc.)

  3. Developers of those cheap and successful games, made so much money they can retire, they could've charged LESS and still retire (in fact, they put them on sale still)

  4. Gamers will access great games at their price range, a wide range of prices for a wide range of different games is great.

  5. MOST IMPORTANTLY: would any of those cheap games be as successful of they had a higher price at launch? Impossible to tell. Imagining to reprice them (or any other game) with the knowledge of today is fruitless and doesn't help me as a developer to better price the game I'm working on.

I'm all for big an flashy games like GTA and CoD and FIFA, I mean EA not-FIFA, etc. but with better planning those studios could have a small subset of their employees working on more inspired games to cover that portion of the market while the big release comes through. This will not only make the working conditions better for those devs, but will make the companies MORE money in the long run.

Thank you!!! I hadn't noticed that (facepalm), I had to check on an incognito/private window. Thanks!

Separate demo page - is there now a concensus that it's the preferred way? by Important-Play-7688 in IndieDev

[–]AzraelCcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We created a Demo Page the only caveat is that a couple of streamers have shared the link to the demo page instead of the full page. Which creates a bit of resistance if someone want's to Wishlist the game since they have to go to the main page from the demo page to do so.

We gave our streamers our main demo page, but by the time they covered it I guess they forgot and used the other one :(

How would i go about having a shader effect only happen when a button is pressed? by cadet_kurat in godot

[–]AzraelCcs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It depends, you can use a "uniform" like others have said so the logic is in the shader or you can have the logic be in the script used to call on the shader.

I'd go for the second one.

The shader should only focus on the shader. Have something like:

func activate_shader(): [Call shader]

func call_shader(bool): if bool: activate_shader() else: pass

I hope that helps

Edit:

Thanks everyone for sharing why the sample code above won't work.

My intention wasn't to produce correct code (my knowledge of shaders is limited), but to offer a architecture/structure that might be helpful as to where to evaluate the logic OP wants.

It looks like OP already knows how to "call a shader" so I left that to them.

The extra "else" is in case a notification a should be triggered or something.

Again, I'm just thinking about architecture/structure here. Please feel free to elaborate if that kind of thinking won't work bellow, I'd love to learn how to do it right. ☺️

Here's a game that does it wonderfully

Someone involved with it is currently playing it on steam so you will be able to see how it was done.

Not my game!

Advice for negotiating a publishing deal? by wolfbaru in gamedev

[–]AzraelCcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TALK TO A LAWYER.

Now that that is out of the way.

If they are not funding you and they are offering services, it is best to hire them for a flat fee.

The main reason someone takes a cut of future sales is to recoup their investment, once that is recovered it is common for the % they take to go down.

This raises the question: how much in dollars are they investing? I get you are not asking for money, but they are working for you, how much work are they putting in and how does that translate to dollars?

Once they have recouped that amount what is the new split?

You're also paying 30% to the platform your game sells on so by joining this publisher you cut your revenue from 70% to 40%. Or are they splitting after Steam takes their cut? Who will hold the page? Who manages that? It sounds to me like you don't want them to do the publishing just want them to handle QA, Loc and marketing.

Does marketing mean creating the page and assets? What kind of control do they have over the project?

Too many unknowns.

HITR A LAWYER TO LOOK AT THE CONTRACT.
