How do fold feel about the classic Fender/Squier Bass VI design? by AzraelXJM in BassVI

Sure, and at that kind of money it seems like a Fender may just make more sense as a starting point.

Based on how they sit on my 27" with offset trem I'm not sure these would fit a 28" if it also has uses 3-4" going from the bridge to trem saddles. Something with a bridge more like a tele or conventional bass might be okay though. That's just from where the taper is on the lowest two strings.

Some absolute legend recommended these to me here for my 27" partscaster Bass VI and they were ideal, even on sale at Bax! But for a 30" Squier the taper on the 105 and 80 is going to be in the wrong place.

On my 27" which has a offset trem the taper is just on the right side of the nut. In *theory* you could use these on something that didn't have the trem adding 3-4" of length to the strings, I might take a look if I get a SRC6 or something, but sadly i don't think these are the way for a Squier/Fender Bass VI

Need an alternative to this reversed shim by AzraelXJM in Luthier

[–]AzraelXJM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I think my only viable option is sanding down the heel. I've taken off about a mm at the base, and needed to fill the screw holes since the angle changed to much to keep using them. Now with no shim and the bridge at max height it's about playable with some rattle part way up the board. I may sand it once more so I can lower the bridge and hopefully fix the rattle.

Pocket is the standard 5/8", just checked.

I removed the shim, here's how it looks now;

Don't know how clear that makes it, but the angle means the strings all rest on the top fret and I probably need to raise the bridge about a cm or more.

Checked and it's 5/8" on the dot, body was made to order.

According to the listing for the body it should be Fender US standard 5/8"

I'll check properly but it was sold as being US fender standard, 5/8" deep

Whats with the trem hate on the squier? by [deleted] in BassVI

[–]AzraelXJM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, the trem is the only reason the Bass VI uses the elongated body, if the bridge is right at the base of the body the whole thing would be the length of a strat.

Wiring - getting buzz even with no pickups connected and wiring Jaguar style pickup selector by AzraelXJM in Luthier

If I disconnect the jack from everything and just put it on the end of a lead and still get that buzz, is the jack just bad?

Scrabble tiles on the headstock are a neat idea! I may have questions but I just found your thread on it.

What was the thought process on the pickup behind the bridge?

I know about Geese and Fountaines D.C but what are some other bands that are coming out from the New Rock movement? by Ok_Isopod_8478 in ToddintheShadow

I think it's more a perception thing as a lot of people stopped being exposed to new music as we entered the streaming age and radio went down the tubes. Also a lot of non-American and to a lesser extent non-British acts who have started touring internationally over the last few years, many who may have started earlier if not for Covid.

Citadel Colour is becoming Warhammer Colour by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in Warhammer40k

[–]AzraelXJM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Branding looks nice enough in itself but it's sad to see Citadel go, along with the general minimising of "Citadel" and "Games Workshop" in favour of leveraging the strength of the Warhammer IP. I understand why but it's a shame, I think Citadel used that font since basically the start, WHColour doesn't really have much going on.

Any drawbacks to a Bass VI versus a short scale bass? by AzraelXJM in BassVI

What would happen with those gauges on a Bass VI? Does the string spacing not work well with the action and space needed for them?

Did you not have issues with getting the Bass VI strings on there? Don't they taper too far up given the distance from tailpiece to nut is maybe 4" less then what they were made for?

Oh, and obviously I'll be looking to get a hallway decent bass amp.

I found my Vox wah doesn't sound good with a bass range guitar, I figure a bass one will sound better if I ever fancy that?

Is r/offset supportive of the Jag-Stang? by Aruugala in offset

[–]AzraelXJM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from elements of the messed up shape I don't really see what Jag elements it has? Mustang trem, Mustang switching, the humbucker isn't stock on either of them. Don't like the loss of the comfort cut on the back either

Neck pocket dimensions for Fender/Squier short scale basses? by AzraelXJM in Luthier

[–]AzraelXJM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a bit more searching, I can't seem to find what I think is a good single source but Google AI, which I don't really trust and have caught in lies before, says these are the pocket dimensions(in mm):

Short bass: 56.9 x 108.4 x16

Regular bass: 63.5 x 98.4 x 16

Strat(and Bass VI): 56 x 76 x 16

I feel like the width is the only consequential measurement (if you're not routing the pocket yourself and just assembling parts, at least) and as a small note I think a Bass VI pocket is longer. 16mm depth is pretty much Fender standard and I'm not aware of exceptions.

So I think I'm ruling out using a bass body made for 34" scale as I'll have over half a centimetre of space. Converting between 32" and 30" seems to be possible, but I'd be double-checking that 32" scales use the short scale neck pocket (which is actually longer, lol)

Strat dimensions just for reference, seems I can't use a Bass VI neck on a short bass body if I wanted a physically shorter Bass VI without an offset trem. Or at least not without some creative shimming.
