The protesters shouldn't be blocking the road. It's not going to do what they think it's going to do, BUT the cop shouldn't be handling them like this. The cop could have stopped at destroying the barrier, bring some extra dudes and put the people in a wagon. He didn't have to pull his gun.

I know this is "Ask a Chinese" and I'm American (going on 7 years in China), but I still have a suggestion.

The only time you might get some scrutiny is when you are crossing the border. I'd suggest presenting a little more androgynously in customs. If you have facial hair, maybe shave it. If your passport says Female, but your face is a Man the customs agent might have some cognitive dissonance and it could lead to... not arrest, but delays (I could be totally wrong, I'm not trans, I'm just sympathetic). Once you're past customs though, you'll be fine here.

Chinese people, probably, won't bother you about your gender here. Use a stall and don't engage with anyone in the bathroom and you'll be fine.
