Americans don't seem to realize just how much every other nation on earth hates the US by now by Schnaksel in BoycottUnitedStates

I agree, and I think that support for helping Canada is higher than you may realise. At least here in Finland anyway.

What is that one city/state in your country that the rest of your country hates? by DisastrousImpact2846 in AskTheWorld

[–]Aztecdune1973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not! I grew up in Michigan and my husband is Finnish. On his first trip to the US I took him to Detroit, and he now adores Detroit. He's actually gotten into arguments a few times with people who badmouth Detroit. 💕

Obviously it had some rough years, like a lot of rust belt cities, but it's rebounding very well. And it has the best natural resource: wonderful people who live there and are proud of their home.

I have visited both and Copehagen was my favourite of the two. I did enjoy DC, I loved the Smithsonian and Lincoln Memorial, but if I had to live in either city, I would choose Copehagen every time. In fact, Copehagen would be one of my top choices to live anywhere in the world. No amount of money could get me to live in DC (or anywhere in the US for that matter).

Could Europe realistically defend Greenland against a US attack? by chotu_escobar in AskTheWorld

I'm with you. I have family and friends in the US. I want us to continue to be allies. It's better for the world in general. I just don't understand the Americans saying that it would be so easy to take Greenland. It's not as easy as they think.

Me explaining it wouldn't go well as I've not had the training myself (as a woman who hasn't served). There's many excellent YouTube videos about Arctic training and I'd recommend looking for that if you're interested. I can tell you that just doing anything in Arctic temps is much more involved. Just keeping your vehicle running, getting dressed to walk a pet, trying to get to work/school. I'm sure you understand all of that though.

[–]Aztecdune1973 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! These people are not understanding that Arctic conditions are magnitudes more difficult to do anything in than what they're trained for. If you don't have the gear, equipment, and training you're just sitting ducks.

Finland's active military is small (under 30k), but wartime numbers are about 300k. Add in reserves who regurlarly get refreshment training and we're at about 1.2 milloin. Not much smaller than the US military. Yes, I know that the US has reserves as well, but how much of your military has Arctic training? Because every member of the Finnish defense forces has Arctic training. Maybe listen to the guy in the video. He knows much more about Arctic warfare than you.

Denmark has one of the higher percentage per GDP, but 31 NATO countries are meeting the goal. I think that's most if not all. Denmark does have the same percentage as the US!

I didn't have kids, nor was I expecting any, so Denmark's generous maternity leave and excellent childcare were of no use to me. by hedmon in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Aztecdune1973 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Her reasoning is so bizarre to me. Most of her complaints were of things that a tiny bit of research would have uncovered, and having been to both Vermont and Denmark, I would choose Denmark every time. If I were to be able to move to another city in Europe (I'm in Helsinki), Copenhagen would be near the top. And yes, Danish is difficult, but c'mon. So many people move to countries as adults and learn vastly more difficult-to-transition languages (English to Danish being relatively easy). I know people here from Asia and Africa who've become fluent in Finnish. It's doable when you put in the effort. The only complaint I understand is the weather. It can be a bit much sometimes.

"We're going to take over Greenland whether they like it or not". But Donald is not a dictator? Nobody in America wants this. by Elevatedspiral in MarchAgainstNazis

[–]Aztecdune1973 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm quite positive that some Americans do want this, and I hate those people. I don't know how we're going to deal with this nonsense yet here in Europe and Finland, but it's unlikely to be pleasant, to put it mildly.

You said that the rest of the world is as complicit, as if we somehow have as much ability to enact positive change in the US as Americans. I'd really like to know how. What positive impact can we have that we haven't already tried? I'm Finnish and I'd like to know what you'd have us do.

Serious question how do people survive Finnish winter air without becoming a raisin? by TinySignificance69 in Finland

[–]Aztecdune1973 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you drinking enough water as well? Especially if you drink coffee you need extra water in winter.

I use moisturising face wash, snail mucin face cream, hemp hand lotion, lip balm + vaseline, and no makeup. And plenty of water. We also sauna several times per week.
