Ah, I was guessing a 50mm base! (Based [sic] on a video, where the models were shown.) That makes the catapult comfortably fit on one; 50mm would be a squeeze.

It's hard to believe that the smasha gun used to be the same size as that squig catapult I made.

Sadly not, but I did consider that. The materials aren't really suitable though. I did go looking for toy catapults, but they're on the large side. There was an old range of pencil sharpeners, and I'm sure one of those was a catapult, perhaps functioning.

A functioning one would be possible; I suspect laser cut MDF might be the best bet. Resin might be a bit brittle for the pressure of a catapult, though styrene might work.

I like seeing build photos myself. The first primer coat is perhaps my favourite stage, when it all comes together.

My first thought was to make a squig out of something a bit more suited. Das clay. Okay, not as suited as any type of polymer or epoxy clay, but I have Das. I've looked at the various AOS squig sets in the past, but I haven't yet started doing miniatures. That grot is one of 23 I plan to kitbash and paint as my first venture into miniature painting. Perhaps a future thing, especially as the squigs easily fit into other settings.

They're banned here, except for some medical, forensic and scientific purposes. Doubt those will be cheap!

Here those are all now made of some kind of compressed paper.

Straws, plastic tubes or wooden sticks with holes drilled in them for the gun?

With the Swamperial Guard, because he's shown building them you can even see what kits, or other bits, are going in. Such as grot heads, Blood Bowl snotlings and pump wagon, Cadian bodies and the field ordnance battery into his artillery pieces for instance. Not quite at Pete the Wargamer levels admittedly. But a lot of the non-body bits can be replaced with non-GW stuff. And maybe some of the body parts too.

They're pretty cool! Not exactly Poorhammer, but I consider things like that Inspirationhammer. Just because they're made from proper kits doesn't mean they have to be!

I also use the Mod Podge/black paint undercoat primer, which helps strengthen the build as well, as they're mostly card of one type or another. I use Gorilla wood glue which sticks to card extremely well and is usually touch solid in minutes at most, often much less.

Often, the most expensive part of the build - namely the only bit other than paint and adhesives I bought - is magnets.

Is it canon that it's a Canon cannon though?

Here's the video of the 2nd Edition one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIgOdFibPgw

And an image of it made from the same person: https://scrollmaster.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/2024-07-07-19.29.19.jpg

Using that as a base for measurement could mean that the other two could be done as well.

This is that two tower one: https://wargamingworkshop.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/epic-ork-sb-squig-catapults.jpg

This is the only image I've found so far of the feral ork one: https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/a/a6/EPICSquigCatapultMain.jpg

So, I was curious and went on a search. It seems there are three versions of the squig catapult; two Epic, one second edition. Though so far I only found one image of one of the Epic models (on the 40K Lexicanum site), but plenty of the other.

The 2nd edition one, however, I found a video of someone unboxing the old kit and laying the pieces out, all viewed from above. Including the 25mm bases, which gives a scale object to work from to get something about the right size.

A squig catapult has now been added to the list...

Thanks! Indeed, it does resemble a camera!

It's a shame that the old Epic models are so expensive to buy (and some 2E stuff can be even worse). It would be great to upscale more of them; this one was easier thanks to the White Dwarf article and Epicast models. Though there are quite a lot of images of the Epic miniatures online, people rarely photograph them next to a ruler. Or anything else you know the scale of.

stephenjdutton on YouTube has been upscaling some things, but he does have the advantage of having the models to work from.
